1 Why and how The Lanczos method is quite eeective if the desired eigenvalue is either max or min and if this eigenvalue is relatively well separated from the remaining spectrum, or when the method is applied with (A ? I) ?1 , for some reasonable guess for an eigenvalue. If none of these conditions is fulllled, for instance the computation of a vector (A ? I) ?1 y for given y may be computation...

Gradient iterations for the Rayleigh quotient are elemental methods for computing the smallest eigenvalues of a pair of symmetric and positive definite matrices. A considerable convergence acceleration can be achieved by preconditioning and by computing Rayleigh-Ritz approximations from subspaces of increasing dimensions. An example of the resulting Krylov subspace eigensolvers is the generaliz...

This paper addresses a challenging problem in computational mechanics—the analysis of thick shallow shells vibrating at high modes. Existing methods encounter significant difficulties for such a problem due to numerical instability. A new numerical approach, DSC-Ritz method, is developed by taking the advantages of both the discrete singular convolution (DSC) wavelet kernels of the Dirichlet ty...

An alternative to the classical Ritz method of approximate optimization is investigated. In the extended Ritz method, sets of admissible solutions are approximated by their intersections with linear combinations of n-tuples from a given set. This approximation scheme, called variable-basis approximation, includes functions computable by trigonometric polynomials with free frequencies, neural ne...

This paper is concerned with the reduction of the spectral problem for symmetric linear operator pencils to a spectral problem for the single operator. Also, a Rayleigh–Ritz–like bounds on eigenvalues of linear operator pencils are obtained.

In this paper, the Ritz-Galerkin method in Bernstein polynomial basis is applied for solving the nonlinear problem of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of third grade fluid between the two plates. The properties of the Bernstein  polynomials together with the Ritz-Galerkin method are used to reduce the solution of the MHD Couette flow of non-Newtonian fluid in a porous medium to the solution o...

An effective numerical method based on Legendre polynomials is proposed for the solution of a class of variational problems with suitable boundary conditions. The Ritz spectral method is used for finding the approximate solution of the problem. By utilizing the Ritz method, the given nonlinear variational problem reduces to the problem of solving a system of algebraic equations. The advantage o...
