Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is shed in feces but also in saliva. HAV RNA was detected in saliva in five out of six acutely infected patients with HAV viremia. Serum and saliva sequences were identical. The simplicity of obtaining material allows the recommendation of the use of saliva for investigation of outbreaks.

Microorganisms in dental plaque live in constant association with saliva. The role of saliva in the adherence of bacteria to the teeth and the antibacterial properties of saliva have been well investigated; less interest has been shown in the possible role of saliva as a substrate for oral microorganisms. In this study it was shown that saliva can serve as a growth medium for oral Streptococcus...

The saliva of Rhynocoris marginatus consists of amylase, invertase, trehalase, protease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, phospholipase, lipase, trypsin, hyaluronidase, and esterase. All enzyme activities were significantly higher in the saliva of female R. marginatus when compared to the saliva of male individuals. The saliva was analyzed by tricine SDS/PAGE, sephadex column chromatogra...

Objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is presented with motor and sensory function loss. It is caused by demyelination and following axonal lesion. As myelin basic protein (MBP) is one of the key elements of the myelin cover, we examined the level of MBP in serum, stimulated, and unstimulated saliva as a suitable biomarker for detecting MS. Methods: A case-control study was performed in 29 health...

The dose-frequency requirement for carbamazepine (CBZ) in children was investigated using serial saliva samples to determine the daily fluctuation in drug levels. Mixed saliva was collected from 6 children (aged between 6 and 13 years) in a steady state, on each of two different dose-frequency resulted in smaller fluctuations in saliva concentration and a shorter time with levels outside the th...

Human milk and saliva from newborn infants were analyzed for their content of lactoperoxidase and thiocyanate. The activity of lactoperoxidase in infant saliva was variable but generally higher than that found in calf saliva. In contrast, the activity in human colostrum was low ( approximately 5%) compared with that found in cow's milk. The enzyme was resistant to gastric juice. Thiocyanate was...

Little is known about the involvement of saliva in gingival overgrowth (GO). It was hypothesized that, in this situation, the composition of saliva is altered. Thus, proteins, albumin, cytokines, and growth factors in whole and glandular saliva were investigated. Differences between glandular and gingival contributions to the composition of saliva were explored in patients medicated with cyclos...

although salivary alkaline phosphatase (alp) can balance de- and remineralization processes of enamel, there is no evidence regarding its effects on the concentrations of calcium and phosphate in saliva. the present study aims to determine the relationship between salivary alp activity and the concentrations of calcium and phosphate in saliva. in this cross-sectional study, we evaluated salivar...
