This procedure computes power and sample size for non-inferiority tests in two-sample designs in which the outcome is a continuous normal random variable. Measurements are made on individuals that have been randomly assigned to one of two groups. This is sometimes referred to as a parallel-groups design. This design is used in situations such as the comparison of the income level of two regions...
We study the sample complexity of nondeterministically testable graph parameters and improve existing bounds on it by several orders of magnitude. The technique used would be also of independent interest. We also discuss the special case of weak nondeterministic testing for uniform hypergraphs of arbitrary order.
Monte Carlo simulations are increasingly used to predict pharmacokinetic variability of antimicrobials in a population. We investigated the sample size necessary to provide robust pharmacokinetic predictions. To obtain reasonably robust predictions, a nonparametric model derived from a sample population size of >/=50 appears to be necessary as the input information.
Inspired by Diakonikolas and Kane (2016), we reduce the class of problems consisting of testing whether an unknown distribution over [n] equals a fixed distribution to this very problem when the fixed distribution is uniform over [n]. Our reduction preserves the parameters of the problem, which are n and the proximity parameter ǫ > 0, up to a constant factor. While this reduction yields no new ...
BACKGROUND Researchers commonly employ strategies to increase participation in health studies. These include use of incentives and intensive reminders. There is, however, little evidence regarding the quantitative effect that such strategies have on study results. We present an analysis of data from a case-control study of Campylobacter enteritis in England to assess the usefulness of a two-rem...
The main purpose of this paper is to introduce and study the behavior of minimum ϕ -divergence estimators as an alternative to the maximum-likelihood estimator in latent class models for binary items. As it will become clear below, minimum ϕ -divergence estimators are a natural extension of the maximum-likelihood estimator. The asymptotic properties of minimum ϕ -divergence estimators for laten...
In clinical study, calculation for sample size is often done using the frequentist framework. However, several methods of calculation using the Bayesian framework have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a method for the determination of sample sizes using the index θ = P ( π1 > π2|X1, X2 ) , where X1 and X2 denote the binomial random variables for trials n1 and n2 and parameters π1 and π2...
In this article we have proposed an integrated system for measurement of important features from 3D tissue images. We propose a segmentation technique, where we combine several methods to achieve a good degree of automation. Important histological and cytological three-dimensional features and strategies to measure them are described.
In this paper, we introduce a principled algorithmic approach for Fourier ptychographic imaging of dynamic, time-varying targets. To the best of our knowledge, this setting has not been explicitly addressed in the ptychography literature. We argue that such a setting is very natural, and that our methods provide an important first step towards helping reduce the sample complexity (and hence acq...
