The expression of a subset of Shigella flexneri virulence genes is dependent upon a cytoplasmic chaperone, IpgC, and an activator from the AraC/XylS family, MxiE. In this paper, we report that the chaperone forms a specific and stable heteromer with MxiE.
Shigella is a genus of highly adapted bacterial pathogens that cause bacillary dysentery in humans. Bacteria reaching the colon invade intestinal epithelial cells by a process of bacterial-directed endocytosis mediated by the Ipa proteins: IpaB, IpaC, and IpaD of Shigella. The invasion of epithelial cells is thought to be a receptor-mediated phenomenon, although the cellular components of the h...
The antibacterial effects of 24-h exposures to high-pressure oxygen in relation to environmental CO(2) were studied at 3 atm absolute (ata) and at 1 ata. Eight gram-negative, aerobic and facultatively aerobic, pathogenic enteric bacteria (Salmonella typhosa, Salmonella paratyphi, Salmonella schottmuelleri, Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella flexneri, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Es...
Non-human primates (NHPs) for biomedical research are commonly infected with Shigella spp. that can cause acute dysentery or chronic episodic diarrhea. These animals are often prophylactically and clinically treated with quinolone antibiotics to eradicate these possible infections. However, chromosomally- and plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance has become an emerging concern for species in t...
Spontaneous transition of Shigella flexneri from T- to O-type colonies with concomitant loss of virulence dose not appear to be accompanied by a change in any of the four plasmic species found in the virulent parent.
introduction: shigella is a facultative intracellular pathogen that uses the host actin cytoskeleton protein for intra- and intercellular spread. the aim of this study was to determine the distribution of icsa gene and icsa expressed protein bands among shigella flexneri strains isolated from 3 clinical centers in tehran. material and methods: two hundred and seventy five isolated shigella flex...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence and mechanisms of fluoroquinolone resistance in Shigella species isolated in Bangladesh and to compare with similar strains isolated in China. METHODS A total of 3789 Shigella isolates collected from Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of icddr,b, during 2004-2010 were analyzed for antibiotic susceptibility. Analysis of plasmids, plasmid-mediated quinolone...
The initial interaction of Shigella flexneri with HeLa cells was studied at 4 degrees C, a temperature that inhibits parasite-directed endocytosis. It was found that invasive strains were 10-fold more adherent to HeLa cells than were isogenic, noninvasive strains which had lost a 140-megadalton plasmid. Adherent strains were also more hydrophobic than were nonadherent strains.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Diarrheal diseases are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children in developing countries. Of the bacterial causes of dysentery, Shigella are the major enteropathogens with outbreak potential and common development of antimicrobial resistance. This study determined the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of different spp. of Shigella in Asm...
