The printed Biomaterial Laboratory at UTEP does research a printable hydrogel which can have appropriate properties for tissue engineering of the skin. Skin is the largest organ in our body which protects us from the environment and pathogens. Skin can be affected by burns and also by diabetic foot ulcers. The current tissue engineered skin substitutes for treatment of diabetic foot ulcers have...

A large supply of air free from micro-organisms is needed for certain modern commercial processes, such as submerged fermentations, which depend upon aeration and the control of infection. Consequently, it is necessary to test this air for sterility. Most methods of estimation are unsuited to lengthy tests and to large quantities of air, for instance the membrane filter (Haas, 1956), which, tho...

Immobilization of cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis in sodium alginate (1.5 %) gave the best quality of bead and 15-16 beads were formed per mL of aqueous solution of alginate. The immobilized cells were used in a batch process for treatment of diluted sewage. After 8 days, 95 % of BOD5, 77 % of COD, 90 % of ammonia, and 94 % of TSS were removed.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The most common method for alginate impression disinfection is spraying it with disinfecting agents, but some studies have shown that these impressions can be immersed, too. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional stability of alginate impressions following disinfecting by spray and immersion methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four common disinfecting agents (Sod...

Alginate oligosaccharides with different bioactivities can be prepared through the specific degradation of alginate by alginate lyases. Therefore, alginate lyases that can be used to degrade alginate under mild conditions have recently attracted public attention. Although various types of alginate lyases have been discovered and characterized, few can be used in industrial production. In this s...

Encapsulation of probiotic bacteria with a matrix can increase their survival rate by protecting them from adverse conditions and at the same time without affecting the production of metabolites. An effort has been made to encapsulate the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum using calcium alginate. Box-Behnken model of response surface methodology (RSM) was employed in the optimization of major en...

The objectives of this study were to develop and to characterize sodium alginate based matrix-type transdermal films of metoclopramide hydrochloride (MTC) in order to improve patient compliance to treatment. The suitability of sodium alginate was shown to be a natural film former in terms of the physicochemical, mechanical, and bioadhesive features of the MTC loaded transdermal films. Terpinole...

A new emulsion gelation method was used to prepare gel beads for a highly water-soluble drug metformin hydrochloride using sodium alginate as the polymer. The gel beads containing oil was prepared by gently mixing or homogenizing oil and water phase containing sodium alginate which was then extruded into calcium chloride solution to produce gel beads. The effects of factors like type of oil and...
