In the title compound, C(22)H(19)ClN(2)O(2)S, the dihedral angle between the phenyl-ene ring and the phthalimide ring system is 4.4 (1)°. There is no hydrogen bonding or π-π stacking in the crystal structure.

Hydrogen-bond-mediated complexation of a CG base pair by a hexylureido phthalimide and a hexylureido isoindolin-1-one was studied by (1)H NMR spectroscopy in an organic solvent. Chemical shift data indicate that both receptors effectively bind the CG base pair from the major groove side.
4,5-Bis(aminomethyl)acridine, useful as an immunosuppressant, was prepared in 31% overall yield by the reaction of acridine with N-(hydroxymethyl)phthalimide and subsequent decomposition with excess 6 N HCl. The drug was found to produce a suppression of the humoral antibody response comparable to several known immunosuppressive agents.
