Supposing there exists an effective charge which defines evolution scheme for both unpolarised and polarised parton distribution functions (DFs) that is all-orders exact using Ansätze hadron-scale proton valence quark DFs, constrained by flavour-separated axial charges insights from perturbative quantum chromodynamics, predictions are delivered all DFs at the scale ζC2=3 GeV2. The pointwise beh...

A new class of materials termed topological insulators have been intensively investigated due to their unique Dirac surface state carrying dissipationless edge spin currents. Recently, it has been theoretically proposed that the three dimensional analogue of this type of band structure, the Weyl Semimetal phase, is materialized in pyrochlore oxides with strong spin-orbit coupling, accompanied b...

HERMES has measured azimuthal single-spin asymmetries of charged pions produced in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons on a transversely polarised hydrogen target. The presented azimuthal moments provide access to two yet unknown quark distribution functions, the transversity distribution function δq and the Sivers function f ⊥ 1T .

Single–spin asymmetries in semi–inclusive pion production are measured by the HERMES experiment for the first time, with a transversely polarised hydrogen target. Two different sine–dependencies are extracted which can be related to the quark distributions transversity h1(x) and the Sivers function f ⊥ 1T (x).

The mechanism of egg-chamber elongation during Drosophila oogenesis has always been mysterious. A new study shows that the egg chambers spin around their long axis laying down polarised extracellular matrix, which acts as a molecular corset to restrict radial expansion.

Appropriately doped perovskite oxides of manganese such as La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) are ferromagnetic metals in which the conduction electrons tend to be 100% spin polarised [5]. It is therefore desirable to fabricate CNT devices with LSMO electrodes. However, to integrate these two very different material systems into a single device is challenging since their growth conditions are potentially mu...

The electrical levels of various combinations of transition metal-H defects in Si are calculated using spin-polarised local density functional cluster theory with an empirical correction. The shifts of these levels with H can be understood through a displacement and splitting of the gap manifold of states due to the impurity. Passive defects are identified.

The problem of our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon has been with us since the publication of the EMC measurements of the polarised structure function of the proton in 1987. In this talk a brief history of the subject is given followed by a review of the results presented in this workshop and the progress made to date.

Diiractive production of , , ! and J== mesons is observed at the Hermes experiment at DESY. Hermes scatters the 27.5 GeV longitudinally polarised positrons of the HERA storage ring oo an internal gas storage cell target. Polarised and unpolarised gas targets of diierent types are used. The exclusive production from diierent nuclear targets (H, D, 3 He and 14 N) shows coherent and incoherent con...

We compute the full x-dependence of the proton and neutron spin structure functions in the MIT bag model, including the effect of gluon exchange and the meson cloud. Impressive agreement is found for x larger than 0.1, where polarised gluons are not expected to play a significant role.
