An invasive paraganglioma of the posterior mediastinum caused spinal cord compression in a 31 year old women. Electron microscopic examination of the paraganglioma invading the epidural space revealed numerous dense-cored granules in the cytoplasm of the tumour cells. We are reporting this case to present the ultrastructure of mediastinal paraganglioma, and to call attention to an unusual cause...
Three patients presented with hand wasting and weakness secondary to mid-cervical spinal cord compression. This was due to cervical spondylosis in two patients and a meningioma in one case. This phenomenon is probably similar to that seen with foramen magnum lesions and may be due to spinal cord ischemia distal to the compression, secondary to venous stasis.
Two cases of spinal cord compression resulting from extramedullary haemopoiesis in patients with thalassaemia of intermediate clinical severity are reported. The association between mild thalassaemia with long survival and the risk of spinal cord compression from extramedullary haemopoietic deposits is emphasised.
Bone fluorosis due to high water fluoride contents is endemic in North Africa. Neurological complications as spinal cord compression at dorsal level are rare and unusual. Its outcome depends on early diagnosis and surgical treatment. The authors report a new case of spinal cord compression due to ossification of the yellow vertebral ligament in a patient with previously unknown bone fluorosis.
Spinal cord compression has been described in mucopolysaccharidosis I, II, IV, VI, and VII. The spinal cord compression in the mucopolysaccharidoses is believed to originate from narrowing of the vertebral canal due to bony abnormalities, and thickening of the meninges and spinal ligaments due to glycosaminoglycan infiltration [12]. The current standard of care involves surgical decompression. ...
Seven patients with acute central cervical spinal cord injury were operated upon during the subacute stages following injury, when their condition had improved and become stable for seven to ten days. Myelography in each case showed significant anterior compression of the spinal cord. The rapid improvement in function following the operation in these patients was gratifying and emphasizes the p...
