Determination of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) often is considered to be a challenging undertaking owing to secondary interactions of the analytes' permanently charged quaternary ammonium head or hydrophobic tail with the utilized labware. Here, for the first time, a micelle assisted thin-film solid phase microextraction (TF-SPME) using a zwitterionic detergent 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dime...

Since it was introduced in 1997, in-tube solid-phase microextraction (in-tube SPME), which uses a capillary column as extraction device, has been continuously developed online coupled to LC systems SPME-LC). In the last decade, new couplings have evaluated on basis of state-of-the-art instruments, including direct coupling SPME MS/MS systems, without chromatographic separation, for high-through...

BACKGROUND Traditionally, the essential oil of aromatic herbs is obtained using hydrodistillation (HD). Because the emitted volatile fraction plays a fundamental role in a plant's life, various novel techniques have been developed for its extraction from plants. Among these, headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) can be used to obtain a rapid fingerprint of a plant's headspace. Daucus ...

A fiber coating from polyaniline (PANI) was electrochemically prepared and employed for Solid phase micreoextraction (SPME). The PANI film was directly electrodeposited on the platinum wire surface using cyclic voltametry (CV) technique. The same method was applied for the preparation of SPME fiber coated by polyaniline multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PANI/MWCNTs) composite. The concentration of ...

The electrochemical coating technique was used for the preparation of a polypyrrole coating on a stainless-steel wire, and applied as a fibre for solid phase microextraction (SPME). The polypyrrole fibre was employed for analyzing four volatile aliphatic amines (ethylamine, propylamine, butylamine and pentylamine) in water by headspace SPME using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (G...

The sensitivity and precision of headspace solid-phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) at an analyte solution temperature (T (as)) of +35 degrees C and a fiber temperature (T (fiber)) of +5 degrees C were compared with those for HS-SPME at T (as) and T (fiber) of -20 degrees C for analysis of the volatile organic compounds benzene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, toluene, o-xylene, ethylbe...

In the course of our continuing work on transformation of monoterpenes by microorganisms, the biotransformation of (+)- and (-)-carvone was carried out. The metabolites formed during microbial transformations were screened using a simple, rapid and efficient technique: Headspace-solid phase microextraction (SPME)/GC-MS. The results as well as the application of this technique are described.

Recent improvements in the detection of alkylated aromatic compounds from gasoline accelerants in arson debris use expensive GC-MS-MS instrumentation that is not available to most crime laboratories. This research project uses solid-phase microextraction (SPME), an inexpensive pre-concentration method, to achieve high sensitivities in the analysis of alkylated aromatic compounds.

Two chemical approaches, Tenax extraction and matrix solid phase microextraction (matrix-SPME), were evaluated as surrogates to estimate bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from field-contaminated sediment. Aroclor 1254 was the primary contaminant found in sediment from Crab Orchard Lake in Marion, Illinois, USA, and a total of 18 PCB congeners were selected for study. Bioaccumu...
