In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was conducted to optimize gas sampling locations for the early detection of spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas. Initial simulations were carried out to predict carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations at various regulators in the gob using a bleeder ventilation system. Measured CO concentration values at these regulators were then use...

In five supine normal subjects breathing spontaneously, we studied the effects of high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO), which was achieved by oscillating the pressure in an air-filled cuff wrapped around the lower thorax. Oscillations of 3.5 and 8 Hz (in randomized order) were applied for 15 minutes each at both maximal (mean of 90 to 102cm H,O) and half-maximal peak tolerable cuff pre...

Blood pressure and cerebrospinal fluid pressure changes were studied during lumbar air encephalography under general anaesthesia. Two anaesthetic techniques were used. In one group spontaneous respiration with nitrous oxide, oxygen and halothane was used and in the other controlled ventilation with nitrous oxide and oxygen was maintained. Larger falls in blood pressure, on sitting up, were seen...

Introduction Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a useful tool in the intensive care unit (ICU) and in mechanical ventilation it has been possible to measure lung collapse that presents after a spontaneous breathing test by measuring lung aeration loss and detecting those patients that probably will fail extubation and assessing the necessity of non invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) as well as those ...

Tracheostomy tube might cause tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) due to high cuff pressure or direct mechanical trauma. Surgical repair provides the ideal way to deal with TEF but it necessitates the weaning the patient from mechanical ventilation. Here we report a spontaneous closure of TEF by managing it with improved tracheal catheters in a patient who is dependent on mechanical ventilation.

By using standard psychophysical techniques resistive load detection was estimated in five normal subjects during spontaneous breathing and during passive ventilation in a Drinker respirator. 2. During assisted ventilation a gross deterioration in resistive load detection occurred. 3. The findings imply that active respiratory muscle contraction plays an essential role in the detection of added...

Introduction During assisted mechanical ventilation, appropriate WOB prevents diaphragm atrophy and fastens weaning. During PSV the ventilator support is fixed, irrespective of the patient’s effort. On the contrary, both the NAVA and PAV + algorithms are designed to amplify patient’s spontaneous effort. [1], [2] Objectives To test if the assist ventilation mode algorithm has an impact on patien...

Dose delivery of hydrofluoroalkane-beclomethasone and chlorofluorocarbon-beclomethasone was compared during in vitro neonatal simulations: mechanical ventilation with 40% and 100% relative humidity + Neonatal Chamber-Ventilator System/endotracheal tube; manual ventilation + Neonatal Chamber/endotracheal tube; "spontaneous breathing" + Neonatal Chamber/face mask without/with manual assistance. T...

The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is an ingenious supraglottic airway device that is designed to provide and maintain a seal around the laryngeal inlet for spontaneous ventilation and allow controlled ventilation at modest level of positive pressure [1]. Successful insertion of LMA requires sufficient depth of anaesthesia and depression of airway reflexes to avoid gagging, coughing and laryngeal ...

sor, associate dean for research, and director, Center for Nursing Research, University of Texas, School of Nursing, at Houston. Hemodynamic Stability Patients’ responses to both mechanical and spontaneous ventilation vary according to myocardial function and reserve capacity. Cardiac failure, which may not be apparent when a patient is receiving mechanical ventilation, can be exacerbated with ...
