Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-beta1) plays a key role in connective tissue remodeling, scarring, and fibrosis. The effects of mechanical forces on TGF-beta1 and collagen deposition are not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that brief (10 min) static tissue stretch attenuates TGF-beta1-mediated new collagen deposition in response to injury. We used two different models: (1) an e...

INTRODUCTION Using traditional experimental methodologies [1,2,3], the skin has to be separated from the subcutaneous tissues in order to determine the tissues’ viscoelastic properties. Thus, the complex collagen fiber network in soft tissue could be damaged when the skin is separated from the subcutaneous tissue. Therefore, the viscoelastic properties of the skin and subcutaneous tissues measu...

Morphea is an autoimmune connective tissue disease of the dermis and subcutaneous fat characterized by sclerosis due to excessive collagen deposition. Morphea is classified into different subtypes based on clinical and histological characteristics of cutaneous lesions. An extremely rare subtype of morphea is termed unilateral generalized morphea (UGM). UGM is characterized by indurated plaques ...

Failure of a unipolar pacemaker system due to subcutaneous emphysema is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication after implantation. We report on a pacemaker dysfunction observed three days after implantation in a 91-year-old patient following development of marked subcutaneous emphysema. Function was immediately restored following application of pressure bandages and the condition ...

BACKGROUND Peroral endoscopic myotomy has recently been developed and performed on patients with good results. AIMS To evaluate the technical feasibility of peroral endoscopic full-thickness and partial thickness myotomy in a porcine model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighteen criollo pigs were randomly assigned to 2 groups: group A (partial-thickness myotomy) and group B (full-thickness myotomy)....

Severe subcutaneous emphysema following arthroscopy of the shoulder developed in a 62-year-old man. It subsequently evolved into pneumomediastinum with respiratory distress, but the patient recovered spontaneously. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first report of pneumomediastinum caused by subcutaneous emphysema in the shoulder.

Employing fluorescent antibodies for the detection of homologous plasma proteins in tissue sections, the distribution of plasma albumin, gamma-globulin, beta-lipoprotein, beta(1)-metal-combining globulin, and fibrinogen has been studied in the tissues of infants and children. Plasma albumin, gamma-globulin, and beta(1)-metal-combining globulin were found in many cells and particularly cell nucl...
