A bicyclic guanidine-catalyzed Michael addition of 3-benzyl substituted oxindoles to N-maleimides has been developed to produce oxindole derivatives with a quaternary carbon chiral center at the 3-position in excellent yields and enantio- and diastereoselectivities.
