In the last two decades, scientists have developed a powerful technique to measure the millimeterscale of the Earth ̳s surface deformation by comparing complex synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data that were acquired a few days or a few years apart. This technique is known as interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). The paper is focused on simulation of volume deformation of coastal éros...

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging is an expensive endeavor. It can be difficult for universities, small business, or individuals to experiment with SAR imaging and algorithm development on a low budget. For this reason, a uniquely inexpensive solution to FrequencyModulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar was developed and then utilized as an ultra low cost SAR imaging system. This unique appr...

This paper presents the foundations of conventional strip-mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) from a mathematical point of view. In particular, the paper shows how a simple antenna model can be used together with a linearized scattering approximation to predict the received signal. The conventional matched-filter processing is explained and analyzed to exhibit the resolution of the SAR system.

SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images with very high resolution (till 1 meter) are now provided by new powerful sensors but their analysis, interpretation and classification are very hard when urban areas are under study. In this paper the high resolution in SAR images of built-up areas is faced with a model-based approach allowing detection and correct interpretation of 1 meter geometries.

In this paper we propose a new statistical model for SAR images. According to this model, the SAR image amplitude follows a product of Rayleigh and Bessel functions. We derive the maximum likelihood feature detector for extracting terrain features from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The terrain features are classified as ridges and ravines according to their statistical properties and s...

The author introduces the status of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) programmes and their scientific returns from the last 20 years of activity. The Earth observation programme was started using active microwave sensors in the early 1990s. Spaceborne SAR aboard Japanese Earth Resource’s Satellite-1 (JERS-1) was the pathfinder, and airborne polarimetric and...

This paper presents both numeric simulations and radar measurements related to through the wall imaging technologies. We present synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images obtained by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Forward-Looking Radar system during field experiments and compare those with the results of our Xpatch computer models. We also demonstrate a computational approach based on the Finit...

In this paper the performance of two compression methods for SAR images, based on an overcomplete Independent Component Analysis and on a Compressive Sampling approach are analyzed. The two approaches are analyzed and compared on different set of real SAR COSMO-SkyMed data. Keywords-Synthetic Aperture Radar; Compression; Independent Component Analysis; Compressive Sampling
