It is shown that in the Love-Kirchhoff plate theory, an edge wave can travel in a circular thin disk made of an isotropic elastic material. This disk edge wave turns out to be faster than the classic flexural acoustic wave in a straight-edged, semi-infinite, thin plate, a wave which it mimics when the curvature radius becomes very large compared to the wavelength.

In this paper, a new three dimensional brick finite element based on the strain approach is presented with the purpose of identifying the most effective to analyze linear thick and thin plate bending problems. The developed element which has the three essential external degrees of freedom (U, V and W) at each of the eight corner nodes, is used with a modified elasticity matrix in order to satis...

An effective compression artifacts removal algorithm is proposed based on thin-plate spline interpolation and the theory of projections onto convex sets (POCS). The thin-plate spline model is used to model the luminance in the flat regions of the image. Adaptive projections are used to suppress the compression artifacts in the spatially active image regions. The algorithm includes block mapping...

Landmark-based thin-plate spline image registration is one of the most commonly used methods for non-rigid medical image registration and anatomical shape analysis. It is well known that this method does not produce a unique correspondence between two images away from the landmark locations because interchanging the role of source and target landmarks does not produce forward and reverse transf...

This paper presents novel micromachined two-dimensional array piezoelectrically actuated flextensional transducers that can be used to generate sound in air or water. Micromachining techniques to fabricate these devices are also presented. Individual unimorph array elements consist of a thin piezoelectric annular disk and a thin, fully clamped, circular plate. We manufacture the transducer in t...

Extracting structural information from mesh models is crucial for Simulation Driven Design (SDD) in industrial applications. Focusing on thin-plate CAD mesh models (the most commonly used parts in electronic products such as PCs, mobile phones and so on), we present an algorithm based on primitive fitting for segmenting thin-plate CAD mesh models into parts of three different types, two of whic...

In the paper, an engineering model for the impact breakup of the space target is studied based on the thin plate. The average fragment size model for the impact breakup of the thin plate is established depending on the strain rate, according as Poisson statistic fragments are discrete and distribution model is figured out. On the foundation of the constitution analysis for the target and projec...

Spring constant calibration of the atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever is of fundamental importance for quantifying the force between the AFM cantilever tip and the sample. The calibration within the framework of thin plate theory undoubtedly has a higher accuracy and broader scope than that within the well-established beam theory. However, thin plate theory-based accurate analytic determi...

Thin-plate spline interpolation is used to interpolate the chromaticity of the color of the incident scene illumination across a training set of images. Given the image of a scene under unknown illumination, the chromaticity of the scene illumination can be found from the interpolated function. The resulting illumination-estimation method can be used to provide color constancy under changing il...
