BACKGROUND The pedicle screw placement in scoliosis correction at the apex underlies potential risk for neurological injury. This research is to investigate the relative position of spinal cord at the apex in idiopathic thoracic scoliosis and to explore the risk of spinal cord injury from pedicle screw at the apex. METHODS Thirty-three adolescents with thoracic scoliosis were recruited in thi...
Background Patients with Marfan Syndrome and related disorders have abnormal wall properties throughout the thoracic aorta including low distensibility in areas that eventually dilate. CFD modeling based on MRI data can be used to quantify distensibility and indices such as velocity and wall shear stress (WSS) throughout the cardiac cycle and for the entire thoracic aorta. We sought to use card...
We describe a case of infiltrating angiolipoma of the thoracic wall, which is an extremely unusual site for this tumor. Infiltrative angiolipoma is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that commonly affects the extremities and the trunk. This is the first report of infiltrative angiolipoma that affects this site. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a high intensity signal on T2-weighted images...
Jeune syndrome (JS) is an autosomal recessive disease also known as asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy. A narrow bell-shaped thoracic wall and short extremities are the most typical features of the syndrome. Prognosis in JS depends on the severity of the pulmonary hypoplasia caused by the chest wall deformity. Most patient deaths are due to respiratory problems at early ages. Herein, we report a c...
AIMS Patients with prior major cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events (MACE) are more likely to have future recurrent events independent of traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors. The purpose of this study was to determine if patients with traditional risk factors and prior MACE had increased cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) plaque burden measures compared to patients with ris...
BACKGROUND Pulse wave velocity, conventionally determined between the carotid and femoral arteries, is a useful measure to estimate stiffness of the aorta. We investigated local pulse wave velocity (LPWV) in different segments in the aorta with relatively early-stage atherosclerosis in relation to the extent and severity of atherosclerotic lesions. METHODS Pressure waves were recorded in eigh...
A 7-month-old Holstein heifer presented with posterior paresis and megaesophagus. At post mortem examination, a nodular tumor was found attached to the thoracic wall and the eighth to eleventh thoracic vertebrae, adjacent to the left posterior pulmonary lobe. The tumor was diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma by histology. This is a very rare case of spinal infiltration of rhabdomyosarcoma in cattle.
122 A sixty-one-year-old man with a history of arterial hypertension went to the emergency room secondary to intense interscapular pain, suggestive of dissection. Physical examination revealed diaphoresis, a systolic arterial pressure of 165 mm Hg, and symmetric peripheral pulses. Electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed a sinus rhythm with signs of left ventricular hypertrophy. Thoracic computerized t...
