This report describes a patient who developed cyclosporin-induced thrombotic microangiopathy in a renal allograft. Cyclosporin-induced thrombotic microangiopathy is considered by many as a contraindication to subsequent therapy with cyclosporin. This case is notable for successful treatment with cyclosporin following resolution of thrombotic microangiopathy in a renal allograft.
HIV has been widely recognised as a prothrombotic condition, with the first case reports having appeared more than 20 years ago. However, surprisingly little evidence is available regarding the mechanisms by which this disease leads to thrombosis. There is little doubt that the relationship is both multifactorial and complex. This review aims to look at the available data and provide a concise ...
Thrombotic microangiopathies (TMAs) are systemic microvascular occlusive disorders. The present report describes a patient with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis who had been treated with interferon (IFN)-β1b therapy for eight years and developed TMA. The patient presented with headache, thrombocytopenia, renal dysfunction, severe hypertension, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome,...
Effects of different concentrations of Tetramethylammonium on the thermostability of six DNA dumbbells with similar well defined sequences have been investigated. Each molecule has a 16 base pair duplex stem linked on both ends by T4 single strand loops. Only the sequence of the four central base pairs distinguishes one molecule from the next. The distinguishing central sequences are, [A-T-A-T]...
Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) is one of the two forms of thrombotic microangiopathies and is characterized by the triad of microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopaenia, and acute renal failure. It has been associated with bacterial and viral infections as well as non-infective causes. We report a subject who presented with HUS associated with an influenza-like syndrome which was c...
Sustained inflammation of the vessel walls occurs in a large number of systemic diseases (ranging from atherosclerosis to systemic vasculitides, thrombotic microangiopathies and connective tissue diseases), which are ultimately characterized by ischemia and end-organ failure. Cellular and humoral innate immunity contribute to a common pathogenic background and comprise several potential targets...
