We study macroscopic quantum tunneling of the magnetic moment in a single-domain particle placed above the surface of a superconductor. Such a setup allows one to manipulate the height of the energy barrier, preserving the degeneracy of the ground state. The tunneling amplitude and the effect of the dissipation in the superconductor are computed.

In order to respectively reveal the effects of magnetic shield, materials and normal load on the tribo-magnetization, a series of experiments were carried out on a pin-on-block friction tester with a magnetic shield and a three-axis tunneling magneto resistive-type sensor which has high sensitivity and wide linear range. Results showed that the Earth’s magnetic-field can motivate the generation...

The quantum Hall state at the filling fraction =5 /2 is the leading candidate to be a physical system supporting excitations with non-Abelian braid statistics. While a direct experimental evidence for the latter is still absent, recent experiments by Radu et al. I. P. Radu, J. B. Miller, C. M. Marcus, M. A. Kastner, L. N. Pfeiffer, and K. W. West, Science 320, 899 2008 yielded results favoring ...

It has been shown that different Abelian and non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states can be characterized by patterns of zeros described by sequences of integers Sa . In this paper, we will show how to use the data Sa to calculate various topological properties of the corresponding fraction quantum Hall state, such as the number of possible quasiparticle types and their quantum numbers, as w...

Within a wide class of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems, quantum tunneling of magnetization direction is spin-parity dependent: it vanishes for magnetic particles with half-integer spin, but is allowed for integer spin. A coherent-state path integral calculation shows that this topological effect results from interference between tunneling paths.

Based on the general form of the master equation for open quantum systems the tunneling is considered. Using the path integral technique a simple closed form expression for the tunneling rate through a parabolic barrier is obtained. The tunneling in the open quantum systems strongly depends on the coupling with environment. We found the cases when the dissipation prohibits tunneling through the...

Use of the pressure dependence of kinetic isotope effects, coupled with a study of their temperature dependence, as a probe for promoting motions in enzymatic hydrogen-tunneling reactions is reported. Employing morphinone reductase as our model system and by using stopped-flow methods, we measured the hydride transfer rate (a tunneling reaction) as a function of hydrostatic pressure and tempera...

We show that in ultrasmall superconducting grains any concentration of magnetic impurities or infinitely small orbital effect of magnetic field leads to destruction of the hard gap in the tunneling density of states, and find analytically the exponential tail at low energies. Thus, the tunneling density of states exhibits the "soft gap" behavior. As the energy approaches zero, it vanishes linea...

A general relation between the group delay and the dwell time is derived for quantum tunneling. It is shown that the group delay is equal to the dwell time plus a self-interference delay. The Hartman effect in quantum tunneling is explained on the basis of saturation of the integrated probability density (or number of particles) under the barrier.

We present a theory of tunneling and resonant transitions in one-dimensional molecular systems which is based on Green s function theory of electron sub-barrier scattering off the structural units (or functional groups) of a molecular chain. We show that the many-electron effects are of paramount importance in electron transport and they are effectively treated using a formalism of subbarrier s...
