[reaction: see text]. 2,3-Dihydroxyterephthalamides have been synthesized through a route that avoids the protection and deprotection of the phenol groups. The procedure allows for symmetric and unsymmetric amide linkages. This synthetic sequence significantly decreases the time and cost of preparation and increases the overall yield of this class of metal chelators.

We describe a matrix multiply based block unsymmetric inverse iteration solver for upper Hessenberg matrices. Our kernel is robust in that it prevents overrow by scaling. It uses new techniques to ensure performance is not sacriiced when scaling is not necessary. Finally, we give results on a parallel implementation on an Intel Paragon TM supercomputer.

The novel well-defined chiral bicyclic thioureas based on enantiopure unsymmetric cis-2,5-disustituted pyrrolidine skeleton were firstly synthesized and fully characterized by their H NMR, C NMR and HRMS. Their absolute configurations were also determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

A new unsymmetric guest compound comprising ferrocene and azobenzene moieties was synthesized and can form a host-guest system with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) complexed. The complexation stoichiometries and sites of the ensembles can be selectively controlled by reversible redox and photoirradiation.

The photodynamics in symmetric and unsymmetric β-diketones are studied with transient absorption in the deep-UV. Excitation leads to ultrafast ESIPT while further relaxation and isomerization processes depend on the molecular symmetry and solvent environment.
