Enterococci cause serious illness in immunocompromised patients and severely ill, hospitalized patients. Resistance to vancomycin has increased in frequency during the past few years. Limited therapeutic options are available for vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections and the optimum therapy has not been established. We report a case of nosocomial vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium...

BACKGROUND Vancomycin-resistant enterococci are a leading cause of hospital-acquired urinary tract infection and a growing concern for the clinician. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of daptomycin in the treatment of patients with vancomycin-resistant enterococcal urinary tract infection treated in our 200-bed community-based institution. METHODS Patients with confirmed...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Multiresistant enterococci are emerging as a leading nosocomial pathogen. Knowledge of the profile of antimicrobial resistance is essential to formulate treatment guidelines for infections caused by enterococci. This study reports the antimicrobial sensitivity of enterococci isolated during a one year period from clinical samples of patients admitted to a teriary care ho...

To the Editor: Over the past 10 years in North America and western Europe, a resurgence of bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) has occurred (1). Although the basis for this resurgence is unclear, large bedbug infestations have been attributed to increased worldwide travel, altered insecticide management, and increased resistance to pesticides (2). Marginalized populations in large urban centers appear ...

We retrospectively evaluated 410 patients with coinfection or cocolonization due to vancomycin-resistant (VR) enterococcus (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The prevalence rate was 19.8%. Risk factors included isolation of VR Enterococcus faecalis and use of linezolid or clindamycin. Inc18-like vanA plasmids were found in 7% of VR E. faecalis isolates and none of the...

s: Background: Multidrug-resistant Enterococci are major problem and are increasingly reported worldwide. Enterococcal infections have been associated with higher hospitalization costs and a higher number of related deaths. Treatment of multidrug-resistant enterococci has become a challenge in hospitals around the world due to the lack of reliable therapeutic options. So the present study was u...

We surveyed environmental surfaces in our clinical microbiology laboratory to determine the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (MDRE) during a routine working day. From a total of 193 surfaces, VRE were present on 20 (10%) and MDRE were present on 4 (2%) of the surfaces tested. In a subsequent survey after routine cleaning, all of the...

Rapid identification of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) can assist in choosing the appropriate treatment and preventing VRE spread. The performance of chromID™ VRE agar was evaluated using 184 clinical isolates of Enterococcus spp. and reference strains. The test had a sensitivity of 95.52% but a low specificity of 30%.

Clinical enterococcal resistance to linezolid is defined by the presence of the G2576T mutation. We evaluated the incidence of genetically proven linezolid resistance among vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium strains and linezolid consumption for a possible association. A relationship was found (r(2) = 0.73, P = 0.03) and predicts increasing resistance with current trends of linezolid use.
