A lateral suspension, suitable for a microseismometer application, has been fabricated using deep reactive-ion etching. The critical dynamic parameters of the suspension, namely the normal modes along the compliant axis and the damping, have been determined from slow-scan imaging in an environmental scanning electron microscope. The results show the presence of an unwanted spurious mode which c...

Nanomechanical resonators enable a range of precision measurements in air or vacuum, but strong viscous damping makes applications in liquid challenging. Recent experiments have shown that fluid damping is greatly reduced in fluidic embedded-channel microcantilevers. Here we report the discovery of nonmonotonic energy dissipation due to the fluid in such devices, which leads to the intriguing p...

The damping effect of various gas environments on a silicon, lateral microresonator implemented with piezoresistive detection is investigated in this study. The resonant frequency of the cantilever shifts due to viscous damping by an amount that is directly determined by the molar mass of the gas, thereby providing a method to determine the composition of the gas environment. In addition, the m...

Since the discovery of the large angular scale anisotropies in the microwave background radiation, the behaviour of cosmological perturbations (especially, density perturbations and gravitational waves) has been of great interest. In this study, after a detailed and rigorous treatment of the behaviour of gravitational waves in viscous cosmic media, we conclude that the damping of cosmological g...

In this paper, we present an experimental work using a MOCAP system and an iterative minimization technique to compute damping parameters and to measure their contribution for the simulation of cloth in free fall movement. Energy damping is an important phenomenon to consider for the 3D simulation of warp and weft materials, since it has a great influence on the animation realism. This phenomen...

A biased electrode is used in the Madison Symmetric Torus ~MST! reversed-field pinch @Fusion Technol. 19, 131 ~1991!# to manipulate plasma flow in order to study flow damping and momentum transport. Finite radial conductivity allows a radial current, which provides the toroidal torque that spins up the plasma. The applied torque is balanced by a viscous force that opposes toroidal flow accelera...

This article presents a unified state-space model for ship maneuvering, station-keeping, and control in a seaway. The frequency-dependent potential and viscous damping terms, which in classic theory results in a convolution integral not suited for real-time simulation, is compactly represented by using a state-space formulation. The separation of the vessel model into a low-frequency model (rep...

Extracting quantitative information from amplitude-modulation atomic force microscopy (AM-AFM) in viscous ionic liquids is difficult because existing theory requires knowledge of the cantilever natural frequency, which cannot be measured in the absence of a resonance peak. We present a new model that describes cantilever dynamics in an overdamped medium (Q < 0.5) and derive the theory necessary...

We obtain an exact solution for the breather lattice solution of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. Numerical simulation of the breather lattice demonstrates its instability due to the breather-breather interaction. However, such multibreather structures can be stabilized through the concurrent application of ac driving and viscous damping terms.

In this paper, we study uniform exponential stabilization of the vibrations of the Kirchhoff type wave equation with acoustic boundary in a bounded domain in Rn. To stabilize the system, we incorporate separately, the passive viscous damping in the model as like Gannesh C. Gorain [1]. Energy decay rate is obtained by the exponential stability of solutions by using multiplier technique.
