Single walled carbon nanotubes ~SWNTs! were reacted with molten lithium at 220 °C for two weeks. This induced dramatic changes in their structure as shown by x-ray and electron diffractometry and Raman spectroscopy. A significant fraction of the initial SWNTs transformed into flat nanostrips having intercalated lithium in between them. Lithium forms a superlattice commensurate with that of the ...

Atomistic computer-simulation evidences are presented for the possible existence of one-dimensional silicon nanostructures: the square, pentagonal, and hexagonal single-walled silicon nanotubes (SWSNTs). The local geometric structure of the SWSNTs differs from the local tetrahedral structure of cubic diamond silicon, although the coordination number of atoms of the SWSNTs is still fourfold. Ab ...

Double-walled TiO2 nanotubes with porous wall morphologies are fabricated by anodization under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. TiO2 formed by anodization of Ti is activated to generate electrons and holes by UV and the anodization process is influenced by the photo-generated charges. As a consequence, morphologies of the fabricated TiO2 nanotubes can be adjusted by controlling the UV illumination...

The backscattering contribution to the conductivity, irrelevant for metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes, is proved to become much significant for doped semiconducting systems, in agreement with experiments. In the case of multi-walled nanotubes, the intershell coupling is further shown to enhance the contribution of backscattering for ”metallic” double-walled, whereas it remains insignifica...

A novel wavy-walled bioreactor designed to enhance mixing at controlled shear stress levels was used to culture chondrocytes in suspension. Chondrocyte aggregation in suspensions mixed at 30, 50, and 80 rpm was characterized in the wavy-walled bioreactor and compared with that in conventional smooth-walled and baffled-walled spinner flask bioreactors. Aggregation was characterized in terms of t...

Combinations of up to 6 zone-edge and zone-center optical phonons are observed in the Raman spectra of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). These multiphonon Raman modes exhibit distinct signatures of the one-dimensional nature of SWNTs and provide information on the phonon structure, exciton-phonon coupling, and excitonic transitions in nanotubes.

We report the fabrication of core-shell structured snowman-like microparticles coated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes and their electro-responsive electrorheological behavior under an applied electric field strength when dispersed in silicone oil. It is observed that they form a chain-like structure, possessing microfluidic potential applications with their solid-like property.

The electronic density of states of atomically resolved single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Peaks in the density of states due to the one-dimensional nanotube band structure have been characterized and compared with the results of tight-binding calculations.  2000 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized using nonequilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma. The efficiency of the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment is characterised by XPS, FT-IR spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that the MWCNT structure can be preserved when wet feeding into the plasma is applied.
