We used 7 years of live-trapping data from an Illinois population of prairie voles to examine how survival and reproductive success varied with size and composition of social groups. Specifically, we examined measures of fitness for residents of single female units, male–female pairs and communal groups. Reproductive success, measured as either the number of young that survived to 12 or 30 days...
The relationship between castration and reduced male aggression is well established. However, anecdotal observations of male prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) suggest that castration does not reduce aggressive behavior. To investigate the role of testicular androgens on aggressive behavior, castrated or gonadally intact male prairie voles were paired in a neutral arena with a gonadally intac...
Yersinia pestis Caf1 is a multifunctional protein responsible for antiphagocytic activity and is a key protective antigen. It is generally conserved between globally distributed Y. pestis strains, but Y. pestis subsp. microtus biovar caucasica strains circulating within populations of common voles in Georgia and Armenia were reported to carry a single substitution of alanine to serine. We inves...
BACKGROUND The species Yersinia pestis is commonly divided into three classical biovars, Antiqua, Medievalis, and Orientalis, belonging to subspecies pestis pathogenic for human and the (atypical) non-human pathogenic biovar Microtus (alias Pestoides) including several non-pestis subspecies. Recent progress in molecular typing methods enables large-scale investigations in the population structu...
The examination of raptor pellets can be used to evaluate Arctic biodiversity. We found the remains Meadow Vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) and Ungava Collared Lemming (Dicrostonyx hudsonius) in from Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) nesting northern part Peninsula. differentiated two species by visual identification geometric morphometric analysis molar shape. results our study combined with historica...
Voles and lemmings show extensive variation in population dynamics regulated across and within species. In an attempt to develop and test generic hypotheses explaining these differences, we studied 84 populations of the gray-sided vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus) in Hokkaido, Japan. We show that these populations are limited by a combination of density-independent factors (such as climate) and de...
During 1994-2005, we isolated Mycobacterium microti from 5 animals and 4 humans. Only 1 person was immunocompromised. Spoligotyping showed 3 patterns: vole type, llama type, and a new variant llama type.
Rodents might maintain tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in nature through latent persistent infections. During 2 subsequent winters, 2008 and 2009, in Finland, we detected RNA of European and Siberian subtypes of TBEV in Microtus agrestis and Myodes glareolus voles, respectively. Persistence in rodent reservoirs may contribute to virus overwintering.
