This study explored how religious fundamentalism related to irrational beliefs and primitive defense mechanisms. We also explored how the personality factors of openness to experience and neuroticism moderated these relations. Participants (N = 120) were recruited in an urban area from a Northeastern university, a psychotherapy center, and through Internet advertising. The results demonstrated ...
For any finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold M we use ideal triangulation to define an invariant β(M) in the Bloch group B(C ). It actually lies in the subgroup of B(C ) determined by the invariant trace field of M . The Chern-Simons invariant of M is determined modulo rationals by β(M). This implies rationality and — assuming the Ramakrishnan conjecture — irrationality results for Chern Simons ...
A general hypergeometric construction of linear forms in (odd) zeta values is presented. The construction allows to recover the records of Rhin and Viola for the irrationality measures of ζ(2) and ζ(3), as well as to explain Rivoal’s recent result (math.NT/0008051) on infiniteness of irrational numbers in the set of odd zeta values, and to prove that at least one of the four numbers ζ(5), ζ(7),...
Using an integral of a hypergeometric function, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for irrationality of Euler’s constant γ. The proof is by reduction to known irrationality criteria for γ involving a Beukers-type double integral. We show that the hypergeometric and double integrals are equal by evaluating them. To do this, we introduce a construction of linear forms in 1, γ, and logari...
In this paper we give a general upper bound for the irrationality exponent of algebraic Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field. Our proof is based on a method introduced in a different framework by Adamczewski and Cassaigne. It makes use of automata theory and, in our context, of a classical theorem due to Christol. We then introduce a new approach which allows us to strongly improv...
Abstract Libertarian paternalism is a weak form of that recommends nudges rather than bans, restrictions, or other strong interventions. Nudges influence people’s choice by modifying contextual factors (the “choice architecture”). This paper explores the possibility an epistemic analogue libertarian paternalism. What I call “epistemic libertarian paternalism” “epistemic nudges” stronger pat...
