Maxillofacial fractures present unique airway problem to the anesthesiologist. Patients with LeFort III fractures are at great risk of requiring emergent airway control due to midface instability and oropharyngeal airway obstruction. We present a case where difficult intubation was managed with close cooperation between the anesthesiologist and the surgeon.

BACKGROUND Diffuse airway mucus obstruction is an important feature of severe and fatal asthma. MUC5AC and MUC5B are the principal gel-forming mucins found in airway mucus. The mucin composition of airway mucus likely affects its functional properties. METHODS We quantified the principal airway mucins MUC5AC and MUC5B in the sputum of age-matched children with acute and stable asthma and heal...

STUDY OBJECTIVE The upper and lower airways are continuous. While upper airway symptoms are common in COPD patients, with accumulating evidence to suggest increased nasal inflammation, the relationships among upper airway, lower airway, and systemic inflammatory indexes have not been studied. We aimed to confirm that there is heightened nasal inflammation in COPD patients, to test the hypothesi...

tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (to) is a rare disorder of large airways with unknown etiology which is characterized by cartilaginous and bony nodules lining the mucosa of the trachea and major bronchi. generally, it is benign and asymptomatic, but it may present with cough, exertional dyspnea and wheezing. it could therefore be mistaken with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary ...

Introdouction: This study investigated the potential relationship between vertical facial growth patterns and airway volumes in a sample of Iranian adult patients. Materials and methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 72 adult patients (44 females, 28 males), ages 18– 45 years, who had been referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Shiraz Univer...

Up to 80% of asthmatic children may experience upper airway symptoms which are often perceived as coming from the lower airways. Currently, there are no validated questionnaires to assess upper airway contribution to pediatric asthma symptoms. The Sino-Nasal 5 (SN-5) questionnaire was previously validated for identifying radiographic confirmed sinus disease in children. In this study, we hypoth...

A rescue airway device is used when conventional methods of intubation fail to achieve control of the airway. Although the laryngeal mask airway is often used in the operating room should endotracheal intubation fail, the esophageal-tracheal double-lumen airway represents another alternative rescue airway device. Nurse anesthetists may encounter patients with an in situ esophageal-tracheal doub...

Refractory or difficult-to-control asthma is associated with some clinical and pathological features normally associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), raising the possibility that there are similarities in their pathogenesis. It is suggested that the coexistence of two or more inflammatory stimuli to the airway (multiple hits) is a key factor leading to the development of m...

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether airway granulation, a common occurrence during laryngotracheal reconstructive surgery and a common cause of delays in definitive treatment and treatment failure, is associated with a microbial etiology. DESIGN Prospective case-control study. SETTING Tertiary referral airway reconstruction unit. PATIENTS Patients who had an airway stent as part of their tre...

Adenylyl cyclases are a nine-member family of differentially regulated enzymes responsible for the synthesis of cAMP. cAMP is an important second messenger that contributes to the regulation of airway smooth muscle tone. However, little is known regarding the expression and regulation of adenylyl cyclase isoforms in airway smooth muscle cells. Nondegenerate specific primers were designed for al...
