Reported here is the catalytic, acceptorless coupling of alcohols with in situ generated, non-stabilized phosphonium ylides to form olefins as major products. The reaction uses low catalyst loadings and does not require added oxidants. Hydrogenation of the product is minimized and the reaction leads to Z (aliphatic) or E (benzylic) stereospecificity.

The hydration of terminal olefins to secondary alcohols has been achieved using a Pd(II)/Ru(II) catalyst combination with high regioselectivity and yields. Both vinyl arenes and aliphatic olefins can be hydrated easily with the tandem catalyst system using a low catalyst loading of 1 mol%.

A copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of epoxides with arylboronates is described. This reaction is not limited to aromatic epoxides, because aliphatic epoxides are also suitable substrates. In addition, N-sulfonyl aziridines can be successfully converted into the products. This reaction provides convenient access to β-phenethyl alcohols, which are valuable synthetic intermediates.
