The rates of accumulation of newly synthesized catecholamines and endogenous catecholamine levels in mice were determined after treatment with cycloheximide, acetoxycycloheximde, puromycin, and anisomycin. The rates of accumulation were found to be decreased by all antibiotics tested, weakening the assumption that their amnestic effects are due solely to inhibition of protein synthesis.

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that hexose transport regulation may involve proteins with relatively rapid turnover rates. 3T3-L1 adipocytes, which exhibit 10-fold increases in hexose transport rates within 30 min of the addition of 100 nM insulin, were utilized. Exposure of these cells to 300 microM anisomycin or 500 microM cycloheximide caused a maximal, 7-fold increase in 2-deoxyglu...

Neuronal injury in CNS tissues induces a rapid activation and mobilization of resident microglia (MG). It is widely assumed that changes in gene expression drive the morphological transformation of MG and regulate their mobilization during activation. Here, we used acutely excised neonatal rat brain slices to test whether the morphological transformation and homing of MG to injured neurons requ...

We previously reported that p70 S6 kinase takes part in bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4)-stimulated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) synthesis in osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells. Recently, we showed that BMP-4-induced osteocalcin synthesis is regulated by p44/p42 MAP kinase and p38 MAP kinase in these cells. In the present study, we investigated whether the MAP kinases are involved ...

Nerve growth factors, substrate and cell adhesion molecules, and protein synthesis are considered necessary for most developmental programs, including cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, axogenesis, pathfinding, and synaptic plasticity. Their direct involvement in synapse formation, however, has not yet been fully determined. The neurite outgrowth that precedes synaptogenesis is con...
