Quinones and other oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (oxy-PAHs) are toxic and/or genotoxic compounds observed to be cocontaminants at PAH-contaminated sites, but their formation and fate in contaminated environmental systems have not been well studied. Anthracene-9,10-dione (anthraquinone) has been found in most PAH-contaminated soils and sediments that have been analyzed for oxy-PAHs...
Microbial biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) like Anthracene, represent an efficient, time, and cost-effective way for bioremediation the polluted environment. This study was aimed at isolating, identifying characterizing bacteria with potential to degrade utilize anthracene as a sole carbon source. A isolated from oil spilled contaminated site located in Kano, using enri...
Twofold Perkin condensation of 2,5-dibromophenylene-1,4-diacetic acid with arylglyoxylic acids followed by cyclo-dehydrobromination leads to dipyreno- and diperyleno-anthracene tetraesters and diimides. The imides show surprisingly large absorption shifts versus the esters, illustrating that electron-withdrawing substituents at the anthracene unit efficiently impart long wavelength absorption i...
Ultrastructural alterations of columnar respiratory epithe lium were produced by certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocar bons in suckling rat trachea maintained in organ culture for 11 days. The potent carcinogens 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) and benzo(a)pyrene and the weakly carci nogenic compounds benz(a)anthracene and 5-fluoro-7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (F-DMBA) produced cells whos...
Fragments of embryonic kidney were explanted in organ culture. The embryos were obtained from mice that, during the last third of their pregnancies, received the polycyclic hydrocarbons 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (carcinogenic), benz(a)pyrene (carcinogenic), and their analogs anthracene (noncarcinogenic) and pyrene (noncarcinogenic); the carcinogenic cyclic amines, o-tolidine and 3,3'-dichl...
In the title compound, C(34)H(22)·2C(5)H(5)N, there is a crystallographic inversion center in the middle of the anthracene ring system. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the anthracene and naphthalene ring systems is 83.96 (4)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak inter-molecular C-H⋯N and C-H⋯π inter-actions.
The mol-ecules of the title compound, C(26)H(34), possess crystallographically imposed inversion symmetry. The anthracene ring system is planar within 0.038 (1) Å. The two methyl groups in each independent isopropyl group are oriented on either side of the anthracene plane. In the crystal structure, the mol-ecules adopt a herringbone-like arrangement without π-π stacking.
Anthracene-polyamine conjugates inhibit the in vitro proliferation of the intraerythrocytic human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, with 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) in the nM to μM range. The compounds are taken up into the intraerythrocytic parasite, where they arrest the parasite cell cycle. Both the anthracene and polyamine components of the conjugates play a role in their an...
A novel tubular macrocycle containing four anthracene panels covalently linked by meta-phenylene spacers was synthesized. The tube is approximately 1 nm long with anthracene panels delimiting a columnar cavity with a diameter of ~1 nm and exhibits strong blue fluorescence.
DMBA, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene, is a widely studied polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that has long been recognized as a probable human carcinogen. It has been found that DMBA is phototoxic in bacteria as well as in animal or human cells and photomutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA102. This article tempts to explain the photochemistry and photomutagenicity mechanism. Light irradia...
