We evaluated toxigenic Clostridium difficile detection by a lateral flow assay for antigen and toxin, an enzyme immunoassay, and two commercial PCR methods. Compared to the cell cytotoxicity neutralization assay and toxigenic culture, both toxin detection methods lacked sensitivity. PCR following combined antigen and toxin detection provided the most useful diagnostic information.
Detection of cryptococcal antigen in serum or cerebrospinal fluid allows cryptococcal meningitis diagnosis within few hours with >90% sensitivity. In an HIV-positive patient with Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis, initial antigen detection by immunoagglutination was negative. We thus evaluated a new immunochromatographic detection assay that exhibited a higher sensitivity.
In article 1600197, Xueyuan Chen and co-workers report a novel luminescent bioassay technique, namely, dissolution-enhanced luminescence bioassay based on inorganic lanthanide nanoprobes, for ultrasensitive in-vitro detection of tumor markers in human sera or saliva, such as carcinoembryonic antigen, prostate specific antigen and alpha-fetoprotein, with detection sensitivities several orders of...
BACKGROUND Early diagnosis and treatment are associated with an improved prognosis in blastomycosis. The diagnosis of blastomycosis may be missed by cytology, histopathology, culture, or serology. An enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for detection of Blastomyces dermatitidis galactomannan antigen in body fluids has been used for rapid diagnosis of blastomycosis in humans. HYPOTHESIS Measurement of Bla...
BACKGROUND Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in Taenia solium endemic areas, primarily situated in low-income countries. Diagnosis is largely based upon the "Del Brutto diagnostic criteria" using the definitive/probable/no NCC diagnosis approach. Neuroimaging and specific T. solium cysticercosis antibody detection results are at the mainstay of this diagnosi...
Early definitive diagnosis of dengue virus infection may help in the timely management of dengue virus infection. We evaluated the Standard Diagnostics (SD, South Korea) dengue virus nonstructural protein NS1 antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (SD dengue NS1 Ag ELISA) for the detection of dengue virus NS1 antigen in patients' sera, using a total of 399 serum samples in a comparison with ...
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Group B beta haemolytic streptococcus (GBS) is a frequent colonizer of the maternal genital tract causing peripartum fever, puerperal sepsis, neonatal sepsis and neonatal meningitis. The conventional methods for detection of maternal colonization take 24-48 h. We made an attempt to standardize a rapid enrichment cum antigen detection test to screen pregnant women for GBS...
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori infection is etiologically associated with some important health problems such as gastric cancer. Because of the high clinical importance of H. pylori infection, development of a noninvasive test for the detection of H. pylori is desirable. METHODS In this study, a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) targeted ureC of H. pylori was evaluated on 100 stoo...
OBJECTIVE The aim was to test the performance of a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit for Candida mannan antigen for detecting Candida in oral rinse solutions. STUDY DESIGN Forty-eight oral rinse solutions (38 from patients and 10 from healthy volunteers) were available. Mannan antigen was measured using a commercial sandwich ELISA kit, Unimedi Candida. The result of the...
