In this paper we prove the following result. LetH be a real or complex Hilbert space, let L(H) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on H and let A(H) ⊆ L(H) be a standard operator algebra. Suppose we have an additive mapping D : A(H) → L(H) satisfying the relation D(An) = D(A)A∗n−1 + AD(An−2)A∗ + An−1D(A) for all A ∈ A(H) and some fixed integer n > 1. In this case there exists a uniqu...

In 1909, Einstein derived a formula for the mean square energy fluctuation in a subvolume of a box filled with black-body radiation. This formula is the sum of a wave term and a particle term. Einstein concluded that a satisfactory theory of light would have to combine aspects of a wave theory and a particle theory. In a key contribution to the 1925 Dreimännerarbeit with Born and Heisenberg, Jo...

In this paper we prove the following result. Let R be a 6−torsion free semiprime ∗−ring and let D : R → R be an additive mapping satisfying the relation D(xyx) = D(x)y∗x∗ + xD(y)x∗ + xyD(x), for all pairs x, y ∈ R. In this case D is a Jordan ∗−derivation. Mathematics Subject Classification: 16W10, 39B05

We adapt Kahn-style (\big-step") natural semantics to take on desirable aspects of small-step and denotational semantics forms, more precisely: (i) the ability to express divergent computations; (ii) the ability to reason about the (length of a) computation of a derivation; and (iii) the ability to compute upon and reason about higher-order values. To accomplish these results, we extend the cla...

This paper is an attempt to prove the following result:Let $n>1$ be an integer and let $mathcal{R}$ be a $n!$-torsion-free ring with the identity element. Suppose that $d, delta, varepsilon$ are additive mappings satisfyingbegin{equation}d(x^n) = sum^{n}_{j=1}x^{n-j}d(x)x^{j-1}+sum^{n-1}_{j=1}sum^{j}_{i=1}x^{n-1-j}Big(delta(x)x^{j-i}varepsilon(x)+varepsilon(x)x^{j-i}delta(x)Big)x^{i-1}quadend{e...

We study the higher order Jacobi operator in pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We exhibit a family of manifolds so that this operator has constant Jordan normal form on the Grassmannian of subspaces of signature (r, s) for certain values of (r, s). These pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are new and nontrivial examples of higher order Osserman manifolds. Subject Classification: 53B20. PACS numbers: 0240, 0...
