The purpose of the experiments described here was to investigate global image processing using methods that require global processing while eliminating or compensating for low level abnormalities: visibility, shape perception and positional uncertainty. In order to accomplish this we used a closed figure made up of Gabor patches either in noise or on a blank field. The stimuli were circular or ...

Characteristics of the initial condensate in the recent experiment on Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of 87Rb atoms in an anisotropic magnetic trap are discussed. Given the aspect ratio R, the quality of BEC is estimated. A simple analytical ansatz for the initial condensate wave function is proposed as a function of the aspect ratio which, in contrast to the Baym-Pethick trial wave function, ...

Auxetic behavior in low porosity metallic structures is demonstrated via a simple system of orthogonal elliptical voids. In this minimal 2D system, the Poisson's ratio can be effectively controlled by changing the aspect ratio of the voids. In this way, large negative values of Poisson's ratio can be achieved, indicating an effective strategy for designing auxetic structures with desired porosity.

Numerical and experimental data for the heat transfer as a function of the Rossby number Ro in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection are presented for the Prandtl number Pr=4.38 and the Rayleigh number Ra=2.91×10(8) up to Ra=4.52×10(9). The aspect ratio Γ≡D/L, where L is the height and D the diameter of the cylindrical sample, is varied between Γ=0.5 and 2.0. Without rotation, where the...

We present a method for dynamic recalibration and 3D reconstruction via a structured light system. Assuming that the light planes cast from the digital light projector have been calibrated off-line, we show that the focal length, aspect ratio, and all motion parameters of the camera can be determined on-line. Then the 3D reconstruction can be carried out by either a traditional triangulation me...

During the moult, birds sequentially replace their flight feathers and thus temporarily have gaps in their wings. These gaps will vary in size and position(s) during the course of the moult. We investigated the aerodynamic effects of having moult gaps in a rectangular wing by using a vortex-lattice (panel) approach, and we modelled the effect of moult gap size at the wing moult initiation posit...

Discrimination was measured for height, area, and aspect ratio of ovals and rectangles. Random jittering of the orthogonal property (width, aspect ratio, and area) was used to control the observers' criterion. Weber fractions for aspect ratio were consistently lower than those for area, and about the same as those for height. Performance with ovals and rectangles did not differ significantly. T...

For percolation on (RL)xL two-dimensional rectangular domains with a width L and aspect ratio R, we propose that the existence probability of the percolating cluster E(p)(L,epsilon,R) as a function of L, R, and deviation from the critical point epsilon can be expressed as F(epsilonL(y(t))R(a)), where y(t) identical with1/nu is the thermal scaling power, a is a new exponent, and F is a scaling f...
