The tracheal epithelium can be induced to move as a cellular sheet by heterotopic transplantation, which offers the opportunity to observe migrating cells as a group in an in vivo environment. We therefor investigated the ultrastructural characteristics of migrating tracheal epithelial cells with special reference to the moving front using this transplantation. The migrating epithelial cells un...

Partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO), a common urologic pathology mostly caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, can coexist in 40-45% of patients with overactive bladder (OAB) and is associated with detrusor overactivity (DO). PBOO that induces DO results in alteration in bladder myosin II type and isoform composition. Blebbistatin (BLEB) is a myosin II inhibitor we recently demonstrated ...

The immunogenicity of fractional (one-fifth, 0.1 mL) intradermal doses of the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (ID fIPV) is positively correlated with the size of the intradermal fluid bleb. Training of vaccinators for campaign and routine ID fIPV administration should focus on generating an 8- to 10-mm bleb with each injection. Clinical Trials Registration NCT01847872.

Context. Tenon's cyst or conjunctival cyst formation is not uncommon late complication of traditional extracapsular cataract surgery; however, few reports are available in the literature. Aims. Large cystic swellings were clinically diagnosed as filtering blebs at the cataract incision site in two patients. The purpose of the case presentation is to discuss the factors leading to cyst formation...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the outcomes of conjunctival compression sutures (CCS) for enlarged overfiltering blebs associated with ocular hypotony after uncomplicated trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (TM). METHODS A retrospective analysis of consecutively recruited patients with enlarged conjunctival bleb associated with hypotony who had undergone CCS was performed. Patients were considered for CCS...

PURPOSE To quantify and localize plasmid transfection of filtration surgery tissues using two delivery techniques. METHODS Full-thickness filtering procedures were performed on eyes of New Zealand albino rabbits. In 10 eyes, naked plasmid DNA in saline was either injected beneath Tenon's capsule at the filtration site or absorbed into a collagen shield that was then placed external to the scl...

Mast cells stimulated with antigen undergo extensive changes in their cytoskeleton. In the present study, we assess the impact of actin-modifying drugs and report that, in the presence of cytochalasin D, mast cells stop membrane ruffling, but instead bleb. Bleb formation is reversible following washout of cytochalasin D and occurs in an actin-polymerization-dependent manner. Bleb formation is i...

PURPOSE To study the effect of topical application of mitomycin C on enhancing the efficacy of needling in the management of bleb failure. PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty-six eyes of 32 consecutive patients with an intraocular pressure over 21 mmHg, without bleb or with a thick, flat bleb after the second postoperative month after trabeculectomy, were included in the study. Needling with mitomyci...

Amoeboid movement is characteristic for rounded cells, which do not form strong adhesion contacts with the ECM and use blebs as migratory protrusions. It is well known that actin is the main component of mature forms of these structures, but the exact role fulfilled by non-muscle actin isoforms β- and γ- in bleb formation and migration of these cells is still not fully understood. The aim of th...

Dear Editor, In trabeculectomy, maintaining bleb integrity is essential for preventing hypotony, infection, and exposure of the sclera. An amniotic membrane (AM) is often used to manage bleb integrity-related problems such as intraoperative buttonholes [1] and late postoperative bleb leakage [2-4]. Herein we present a case in which a large conjunctival bleb defect (6 × 3 mm) occurred during tra...
