The control-volume discrete-fracture (CVDF) model is extended to incorporate heterogeneity in rock and in rock-fluid properties. A novel algorithm is proposed to model strong water-wetting with zero capillary pressure in the fractures. The extended method is used to simulate: (1) oil production in a layered faulted reservoir, (2) laboratory displacement tests in a stack of matrix blocks with a ...

Measurements were made of filtration coefficients (Lp), area per unit path length (A/Ax), and equivalent pore radius (rp) in the control state and following severe ischemia (arrested blood flow) for periods of 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 3 hours. The value of A,/Ax for diffusion of all lipid-insoluble substances was not changed after 30 minutes of ischemia, but it was increased after 1 and 3 hours ...

Computational pore-scale network models describe two-phase porous media ̄ow systems by resolving individual interfaces at the pore scale, and tracking these interfaces through the pore network. Coupled with volume averaging techniques, these models can reproduce relationships between measured variables like capillary pressure, saturation, and relative permeability. In addition, these models all...

We propose and analyze a model for sharp fronts in porous media, aiming at an investigation of the capillary pressure. Using the notion of microlocal patterns we analyze the local behavior of the system. Depending on the structure of the local patterns we can derive upscaled equations that characterize the capillary pressure and include the hysteresis effect that is known from the physical system.

In the absence of a direct method with which to measure pulmonary capillary pressure in humans, various methods for analyzing the pulmonary artery pressure decay following balloon occlusion have been described. In this issue of Critical Care, Souza and coworkers investigate the adequacy of these methods for assessing various pathophysiological processes. They studied patients presenting with pa...

An interpretive model of the myogenic autoregulatory response of cat mesenteric arterioles has appeared in the literature; it describes arteriolar dimensional changes during changes in mean systemic arterial blood pressure in terms of tension-radius diagrams (Laplace relationship). The original model assumes that arteriolar pressure is a simple, linear function of systemic blood pressure and th...

We develop an experimental technique that uses computed tomography (CT) scanning to provide high-resolution measurements of aperture distribution and in situ saturation along with capillary pressure and relative permeability for the same roughwalled fracture. We apply this technique to an induced fracture in a cylindrical basalt core undergoing water drainage. We find that the sum of the water ...

Systemic capillary leak syndrome is characterized by recurrent hypovolemic shock attributable to increased systemic capillary leakage. A 26-year-old woman was admitted because of recurrent episodes of hypovolemic shock. Hemoconcentration, hypoalbuminemia, and monoclonal gammopathy were observed. We diagnosed systemic capillary leak syndrome. Three years later, she again had an attack of systemi...
