Klebsiella pneumoniae is a nosocomial pathogen of emerging importance and displays resistance to broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as carbapenems. Here, we report the genome sequences of five clinical K. pneumoniae isolates, four of which are carbapenem resistant. Carbapenem resistance is conferred by hydrolyzing class A β-lactamases found adjacent to transposases.

Metronidazole- and carbapenem-resistant Bacteroides fragilis are rare in the United States. We isolated a multidrug-resistant anaerobe from the bloodstream and intraabdominal abscesses of a patient who had traveled to India. Whole-genome sequencing identified the organism as a novel Bacteroides genomospecies. Physicians should be aware of the possibility for concomitant carbapenem- and metronid...

The growing incidence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria is an emerging challenge in modern medicine. The utility of carbapenems, considered "last-line" agents in therapy of infections caused by MDR pathogens, is being diminished by the growing incidence of various resistance mechanisms. Enterobacter cloacae have lately begun to emerge as an important pathogen prone to exhibiting multiple dr...

INTRODUCTION Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobcter spp. are important nosocomial pathogens and carbapenem resistance is an emerging threat. Therapeutic options for infections with these isolates include colistin. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of carbapenem resistance in P. aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp. bloodstream isolates, phenotypically characterize the resistance...

The activity of MK-0826, a new carbapenem, against 309 Bacteroides fragilis group strains was investigated and compared with that of 11 other beta-lactam and 5 non-beta-lactam agents. MK-0826 showed excellent activity (MICs ranged from < or =0.06 to 4 microg/ml). The new carbapenem may be useful in the treatment of mixed anaerobic infections involving B. fragilis group strains.

Carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Acinetobacter baumannii were isolated from a single patient, each producing different carbapenemases (NDM-1, KPC-2, IMP, and OXA-23, respectively). The NDM-1-producing E. coli strain was preceded by a clonally related carbapenem-susceptible strain a month earlier, suggesting in vivo acquisition of blaNDM-1.

Serratia fonticola UTAD54 is an environmental isolate that is resistant to carbapenems due to the presence of a class A carbapenemase and a metallo-β-lactamase that are unique to this strain. Its draft genome sequence was obtained to clarify the molecular basis of its carbapenem resistance and identify the genomic context of its carbapenem resistance determinants.

BACKGROUND Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important nosocomial pathogen that exhibits multiple drug resistance with increasing frequency, especially to carbapenems making patient treatment difficult. Carbapenem-resistance may be caused by porin gene mutations, active drug efflux, and carbapenemase production. This study evaluated the incidence of genes responsible for carbapenemase production in ...

Cefiderocol (S-649266), a novel siderophore cephalosporin, shows potent activity against carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of cefiderocol against carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae) in immunocompetent-rat respiratory tract infection models recreating plasma phar...

The carbapenem-resistant Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Indiana strain C629 was isolated from a chicken carcass collected from a slaughterhouse in Qingdao, China. The complete genome sequence of C629 contains a circular 4,791,723-bp chromosome and a circular 210,106-bp plasmid. Genes involved in carbapenem resistance of this bacterium were identified by whole-genome analysis.
