While seroepidemiologic studies first suggested a possible association of prior infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae and atherosclerotic risk, the contribution of seroepidemiologic studies of C. pneumoniae and atherosclerotic risk remains a source of controversy, in part because the reported findings appear inconsistent. In general, cross-sectional studies of C. pneumoniae and atherosclerotic ri...

no antibodies to brucella when tested 9 months later is evidence against a common source of infection. Brucellosis in domestic animals has not been recorded in Sweden since the 1950s, and human brucellosis acquired in this country has not been reported since then. The possibility of coital transmission of bmcella has long been suggested, but only recently has brucellosis been isolated from huma...

The in vitro activities of HMR 3647, roxithromycin, erythromycin, and azithromycin against 19 strains of Chlamydia pneumoniae were tested. The MIC at which 90% of the isolates are inhibited and the minimum bactericidal concentration at which 90% of the isolates are killed of HMR 3647 were 0.25 microgram/ml (range, 0.015 to 2 micrograms/ml). Nine recently obtained clinical isolates from children...

The rates of Chlamydia pneumoniae seroconversions suggesting acute primary infections or reinfections and the prevalences of antibodies were followed up among healthy laboratory workers. Annual serum samples were collected from 47 persons in Helsinki from 1958 to 1990 and from 40 persons in Oulu from 1994 to 1999. C. pneumoniae species-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgA, and IgM antibodies we...

Chlamydia pneumoniae was isolated from the pharyngeal swab of a 15-year-old patient with acute bronchitis. The serum IgM antibody against C.pneumoniae was elevated up to 160-fold in the acute phase and decreased to 20-fold in the convalescent phase using the microimmunofluorescence (MIF) test. IgG antibody titers in the acute phase and the convalescent phase were 40-fold and 160-fold respective...

Three methods for the recovery of Chlamydia pneumoniae from spiked nasopharyngeal and blood specimens, including extended culture and additional centrifugations, were compared. Additional centrifugations and a 7-day culture time resulted in a 500- to 5, 000-fold increase in the number of detectable inclusion-forming units.

Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae were evaluated as agents of persistent cough in adolescents and adults (n = 491). Tests of 473 respiratory specimens by culture or PCR or both identified four episodes (0.8%) of M. pneumoniae-associated illness and no episodes of C. pneumoniae illness, suggesting that these bacteria do not frequently cause persistent cough.

The aim of this prospective study of a population of children (age, 2-15 years) hospitalized for severe asthma was to test them for acute infection due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae and acute infection due to Chlamydia pneumoniae. Of 119 patients with previously diagnosed asthma, acute M. pneumoniae infection was found in 24 (20%) and C. pneumoniae infection was found in 4 (3.4%) of the patients dur...
