In contrast to conventional carbon capture systems for power plants and other large point sources, the system described in this paper captures CO2 directly from ambient air. This has the advantages that emissions from diffuse sources and past emissions may be captured. The objective of this research is to determine the feasibility of a NaOH spray-based contactor for use in an air capture system...

Sorption of tungstate on boehmite (γ-AlOOH) is increased by co-sorption with Co2+ over the near-neutral pH range. Batch uptake experiments show up to a 3-fold increase in tungstate uptake over the range WO42-=50-1000μmol/L compared to boehmite not treated with Co2+. Desorption experiments reveal a corresponding decrease in sorption reversibility for tungstate co-sorbed with Co2+. Reaction of bo...

The removal of CO2 through chemical absorption in a bench-scale spray dryer absorber was investigated experimentally using the lime slurry as absorbent. The effect of important operating parameters on CO2 removal efficiency has been investigated; in selected ranges of operating parameters, increasing gas inlet temperature and absorbent concentration lead to permanent efficiency decline, increas...

The 2007 National Research Council (NRC) Decadal Survey on Earth Science and Applications from Space recommended Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days, and Seasons (ASCENDS) as a mid-term, Tier II, NASA space mission. ITT Exelis, formerly ITT Corp., and NASA Langley Research Center have been working together since 2004 to develop and demonstrate a prototype Laser Absorption Spectrom...

The 205-230 nm photodissociation of vibrationally excited CO2 at temperatures up to 1800 K was studied using Resonance Enhanced Multiphoton Ionization (REMPI) and time-sliced Velocity Map Imaging (VMI). CO2 molecules seeded in He were heated in an SiC tube attached to a pulsed valve and supersonically expanded to create a molecular beam of rotationally cooled but vibrationally hot CO2. Photodis...

Liquid amines can be immobilized within the pores of polymeric supports to provide a regenerable CO2 sorbent. This paper describes the capture of CO2 by a range of ethanolamines (primary, secondary, and tertiary) immobilized within the pores of high-surface-area poly(methyl methacrylate) beads. These supported amines were used to remove low concentrations (7.6 mmHg) of CO2 by a pressure swing a...

We report absorption features of solid CO2 stretching and bending modes in several lines of sight, including embedded young stellar objects and the Galactic Center source Sgr A*. The overall CO2 abundance in ices is 15% relative to H2O. Profile shapes are consistent with the presence of grain mantles with distinct polar (H2O-rich) and nonpolar (CO or CO2-rich) layers. In addition to the normal ...

Two new small-molecule enzyme mimics of carbonic anhydrase were prepared and characterized. These complexes contain the salen-like ligand bis(hydroxyphenyl)phenanthroline. This ligand is similar to the salen-type ligands previously incorporated into carbonic anhydrase mimics but contains no hydrolyzable imine groups and therefore serves as a promising ligand scaffold for the synthesis of a more...

The dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cell (DSPEC) integrates high bandgap, nanoparticle oxide semiconductors with the light-absorbing and catalytic properties of designed chromophore-catalyst assemblies. The goals are photoelectrochemical water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen and reduction of CO2 by water to give oxygen and carbon-based fuels. Solar-driven water oxidation occurs at a pho...

We report the identification and characterization of eight new FIR laser lines from methanol (CH3OH) in the range 48.4 to 453.7 µm pumped by sequence and hot bands of a cw CO2 laser. Frequency measurements for most of the new FIR laser lines and from previously reported ones were obtained in the range 0.6-6.8 THz with a one-sigma reproducibility of two parts in 10(7). We propose an assignment o...
