An analysis is presented of ignition, flame spread, and skin burn associated with the ignition and burning of a multilayered jacket. The important physical processes can all be detailed based on simple thermophysical modeling. The ignition process associated with proximity to a radiant heat source is analyzed to see how a change in external (outer) fabric could have diminished the likelihood of...

This paper introduces a class of ferromagnetic, folded, soft composite material for skin-interfaced electrodes with releasable interfaces to stretchable, wireless electronic measurement systems. These electrodes establish intimate, adhesive contacts to the skin, in dimensionally stable formats compatible with multiple days of continuous operation, with several key advantages over conventional h...

Microneedle vaccines mimic several aspects of cutaneous pathogen invasion by targeting antigen to skin-resident dendritic cells and triggering local inflammatory responses in the skin, which are correlated with enhanced immune responses. Here, we tested whether control over vaccine delivery kinetics can enhance immunity through further mimicry of kinetic profiles present during natural acute in...

BACKGROUND Acquired nasal stenosis poses a reconstructive challenge for the facial plastic surgeon. Many surgical options are available, ranging from primary closure to skin grafts to free flap reconstruction for complex defects. The free auricular composite graft is a single-stage procedure that can be used to repair nasal vestibular stenosis causing nasal obstruction. CASE REPORT We present...

This paper concerns uncertainties in structural dynamics for composite sandwich panels constituted of two thin carbon-resin skins and one high stiffness closed-cell foam core. Each skin is constituted of two unidirectional plies [60/-60]. Such light composite sandwich panels, manufactured with a same process, generally present a significant dispersion for their Frequency Response Functions (FRF...

Reconstruction of a composite maxillary defect is frequently performed with a fibular osteocutaneous free flap to address both the bony and mucosal defect. If during the harvest of the fibula a distal skin perforator is not present due to vascular variations, reconstruction can potentially be done using the soleus muscle for filling of the palatal mucosal defect. An additional challenge arises ...

Skin is a multilayer composite and exhibits highly non-linear, viscoelastic, anisotropic material properties. In many consumer product and medical applications (e.g. during shaving, needle insertion, patient re-positioning), large tissue displacements and deformations are involved; consequently large local strains in the skin tissue can occur. Here, we present a novel imaging-based method to st...

Current strategies to improve wound healing are often created from multiple components that may include a scaffold, cells, and bioactive cues. Acellular natural hydrogels are an attractive approach since the material's intrinsic biological activity can be paired with mechanical properties similar to soft tissue to induce a host's response toward healing. In this report, a systematic evaluation ...

DESCRIPTION A 61-year-old man presents with invasive basal cell carcinoma of the scalp. Composite resection results in a 280-cm 2 scalp defect of the outer and inner table. Titanium mesh was used to reconstruct the calvarial defect, while reconstruction of the scalp wound was accomplished with a free latissimus dorsi (LD) flap plus split-thickness skin graft.
