PVT relations in liquid and solid T2 near the melting curve were measured over 20.5 K-22.1 K and 0 MPa-7 MPa (0 bar-70 bar) with a cell that used diaphragms for pressure and volume variation and measurement. Because of ortho-para self conversion, the melting pressure Pm and the liquid molar volume Vlm increased with time. The rates were consistent with a second order reaction similar to that fo...
The globular protein γB-crystallin exhibits a complex phase behavior, where liquid-liquid phase separation characterized by a critical volume fraction ϕc = 0.154 and a critical temperature Tc = 291.8 K coexists with dynamical arrest on all length scales at volume fractions around ϕ ≈ 0.3-0.35, and an arrest line that extends well into the unstable region below the spinodal. However, although th...
A light scattering turbidity method has been employed to measure the dimensionless colloidal osmotic compressibility of carefully characterized model athermal colloid (silica)-polymer (polystyrene) suspensions. Mixture thermodynamics is controlled by purely repulsive, hard sphere interactions between the particles while the polymer is in a good solvent. Polymer size is varied by nearly 2 orders...
We introduce a multiscale framework to simulate inhomogeneous fluids by coarse-graining an all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) trajectory onto sequential snapshots of hydrodynamic fields. We show that the field representation of an atomistic trajectory is quantitatively described by a dynamic field-theoretic model that couples hydrodynamic fluctuations with a Ginzburg-Landau free energy. For liqui...
Light-scattering technique for the study of dynamic thickness fluctuations in thin liquid films. We describe a light-scattering technique capable of probing the dynamics of thickness fluctuations in lipid bilayers. The technique, which we call reflectance fluctuation spectroscopy (RFS), is keenly sensitive to light scattered from the squeeze modes of motion in a thin liquid film, and insensitiv...
The dielectric constant of a polar liquid in a strong electric field changes, in the lowest order, proportionally to the squared field magnitude. The proportionality coefficient (dielectric slope) is traditionally analyzed by mean-field models in terms of the saturation of alignment of individual dipoles as prescribed by the Langevin function. Only a decrease of the dielectric constant induced ...
We present theory and experiments for the force-distance curve F(z(0)) of an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip (radius R) indenting a supported fluid bilayer (thickness 2d). For realistic conditions the force is dominated by the area compressibility modulus κ(A) of the bilayer and, to an excellent approximation, given by F=πκ(A)Rz(0)(2)/(2d-z(0))(2). The experimental AFM force curves from coexi...
The liquid density of five 1H,1H-perfluorinated alcohols (CF3(CF2)n−1CH2OH n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) was measured as a function pressure (0.1–70 MPa) and temperature (293.15–313.15 K). corresponding isothermal compressibility isobaric thermal expansivity coefficients were calculated from the experimental data. results are compared with data literature for equivalent hydrogenated alcohols. Atomistic mo...
The experimental determination of protein compressibility reflects both the protein intrinsic compressibility and the difference between the compressibility of water in the protein hydration shell and bulk water. We use molecular dynamics simulations to explore the dependence of the isothermal compressibility of the hydration shell surrounding globular proteins on differential contributions fro...
The reoxidation rate of sponge iron pellets and briquettes and oxidation of pure iron powder with compressibility between 27% and 55% in air and within the temperature range 300-900°C has been investigated. Factors affecting the oxidation rate are presented. These include the effect of temperature, compressibility, and sintering of Fe-powder before and during the oxidation.
