As described in the previous chapters, optical tweezers have become a tool of precision for in vitro single-molecule investigations, where the single molecule of interest most often is studied in purified form in an experimental assay with a well-controlled fluidic environment. A well-controlled fluidic environment implies that the physical properties of the liquid, most notably the viscosity, ...

Elastomers and their composites are widely used in modern innovative technology: for the production of aviation automobile tires, anti-vibration elements (rubber, rubber-metal springs), dampers, elastomeric bearings. Also they shaft suspensions, as spacers between structural parts, supporting parts fasteners. Elastomeric structures have a high dynamic load, particular cyclic nature, which is ac...

We summarize different studies describing mechanisms through which bacteria in a biofilm mode of growth resist mechanical and chemical challenges. Acknowledging previous microscopic work describing voids and channels in biofilms that govern a biofilms response to such challenges, we advocate a more quantitative approach that builds on the relation between structure and composition of materials ...

We consider a thermo-elastic plate system where the elastic equation does not account for rotational forces. We select the case of hinged mechanical B.C. and Neumann thermal B.C., which are coupled on the boundary. We show that the corresponding s.c. contraction semigroup (on a natural energy space) is analytic and, hence, uniformly stable. Because of the boundary (high) coupling, this case of ...

This study presents a coupled thermo-fluid-mechanical peridynamic model to predict composite responses under fire scenarios. Three-layer laminated is modelled by using ordinary state-based thermo-mechanical peridynamics. Both the mechanical deformation and heat conduction are simulated considering thermal degradation properties of composites. The as heat-conducting fluid thermo-fluid based on d...

The amplitude death phenomenon has been experimentally observed with a pair of thermo-optical oscillators linearly coupled by heat transfer. A parametric analysis has been done and compared with numerical simulations of a time delayed model. The role of the coupling strength is also discussed from experimental and numerical results.

In this paper we present a self–adaptive finite element method to solve flame propagation problems in 3D. An implicit time integrator of Rosenbrock type is coupled with a multilevel approach in space. The proposed method is applied to an unsteady thermo–diffusive combustion model to demonstrate its potential for the solution of complicated problems.

A proof-of-concept for a new and entirely CMOS compatible thermo-optic reconfigurable switch based on a coupled ring resonator structure is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. Preliminary results show that a single optical device is capable of combining several functionalities, such as tunable filtering, non-blocking switching and reconfigurability, in a single device with compact footpr...

The use of thermoplastics in the automotive industry is continuously increasing. Design parts require characterization and numerical modelling thermo-mechanical behaviour those materials under wide strain rate (0–300 s−1) temperature ranges (−30 °C to +85 °C). Large costly experimental campaigns are therefore necessary identify all behaviour's sensitivities. Yet, time-temperature-superposition ...
