Using an antibody specific for creatine phosphokinase (CPK), we have discovered an association between that enzyme and the cytoskeleton. Immunofluorescence observations show that CPK is associated with intermediate filaments in PTK cells and BALB/3T3 cells. The CPK distribution also follows intermediate filaments when cells are treated with colchicine.
An elderly woman with chronic ulcerative colitis who developed proximal muscle weakness, increased serum creatine phosphokinase activity, and histological and electromyographic abnormalities characteristic of polymyositis is described. Treatment with corticosteroids and 5-acetylsalicylic acid was followed by a remission in bowel symptoms, improvement in muscle power, and reversal of electromyog...
The neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is presumably caused by neuroleptic blockade of dopamine receptors, mainly in the basal ganglia and hypothalamus. Symptoms include hyperthermia, muscular rigidity, and elevated serum creatine phosphokinase level, also autonomic dysfunction and, facultatively, impairment of consciousness. Clinical features, differential diagnosis and pathogenesis are disc...
Sustained increase of serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) concentrations and muscle abnormalities have been reported in patients taking raltegravir (RAL). In this report, we describe a case of sustained and asymptomatic increase of serum CPK concentrations associated with raltegravir, zidovudine, and lamivudine in an HIV-1 experienced patient with intolerance to protease inhibitor, abacavir and ...
