Calculations of the number of curves on a Calabi-Yau manifold via an instanton expansion do not always agree with what one would expect naively. It is explained how to account for continuous families of instantons via deformation theory and excess intersection theory. The essential role played by degenerate instantons is also explained.

BACKGROUND Considerable morbidity and mortality are still associated with congestive heart failure (CHF) syndromes, despite improvement in therapy. Activation of neurohormonal, inflammatory, and oxidative mechanisms has been shown to contribute to the significant morbidity and mortality. Erythropoietin (EPO) is a cytokine known to regulate erythroid proliferation, attenuate apoptosis and oxidat...

BACKGROUND The diagnosis of cattle-related sensitization is complicated by the variability and complexity of cattle allergen extracts. OBJECTIVE To evaluate a modified diagnostic procedure leading to more accurate results especially in the early phase of sensitization. METHODS We tested 27 claw trimmers with and 65 without cattle-related symptoms using two commercially available cattle alle...

BACKGROUND The mechanisms behind natural control of HIV replication are still unclear, and several studies pointed that elite controllers (ECs) are a heterogeneous group. METHODS We performed analyses of virologic, genetic, and immunologic parameters of HIV-1 controllers groups: (1) ECs (viral load, <80 copies/mL); (2) ebbing elite controllers (EECs; transient viremia/blips); and viremic cont...

IMPORTANCE D-dimer measurement is an important step in the diagnostic strategy of clinically suspected acute pulmonary embolism (PE), but its clinical usefulness is limited in elderly patients. OBJECTIVE To prospectively validate whether an age-adjusted D-dimer cutoff, defined as age × 10 in patients 50 years or older, is associated with an increased diagnostic yield of D-dimer in elderly pat...

Purpose: With the recent discovery that -methlyacly-coenzyme A racemase (AMACR) is over expressed in a majority of prostate cancer (CaP) specimens we developed a novel polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based approach that would predict the presence of CaP from prostatic secretions. Materials and Methods: A total of 21 patients were enlisted in this study, including 10 with CaP, 2 with high grade ...

Literature about the value of diagnostic tests for hazelnut allergy in children is scarce. For peanut allergy cutoff levels of specific IgE with a 95% positive predictive value (PPV) were published. To evaluate current diagnostics for hazelnut allergy in children, data of 151 children, who underwent a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) for hazelnut were analyzed. The PPV or...

High levels of BAALC, ERG, EVI1 and MN1 expression have been associated with shorter overall survival in AML but standardized and clinically validated assays are lacking. We have therefore developed and optimized an assay for standardized detection of these prognostic genes for patients with intermediate cytogenetic risk AML. In a training set of 147 intermediate cytogenetic risk cases we perfo...
