Onthophagus fragosus, a new species of Onthophagus, is described from Cienfuegos Province on the island of Cuba. Specimens were collected in leaf litter samples at elevations of 650-935 m. It appears to be most closely related to O. marginatus Castelnau, the only other Cuban endemic Onthophagus species. Images of habitus and of male genitalia are provided.
Abstract Ontogenetic shifts in food preference reduces intraspecific competition as immature individuals eat different types than adults. This diet plasticity could facilitate species’ ability to successfully invade and establish itself a new environment, even when co-occurring with phylogenetically close species. Here, ontogenetic of non-native piranha species (Serrasalmus marginatus) was test...
Effect of temperature on the life history of the mealybug Paracoccus marginatus Williams & Granara de Willink (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) was investigated in the laboratory. P. marginatus was able to develop and complete its life cycle at 18, 20, 25, and 30 +/- 1 degrees C. At 15, 34, and 35 degrees C, the eggs hatched after 27.5, 5.9, and 5.5 d of incubation, respectively, but further developm...
The prevalence of the tick-borne spotted fever group rickettsioses pathogens in ticks collected Barnaul, administrative center Altai Krai, Western Siberia, was studied. causative agent lymphadenopathy (TIBOLA) Rickettsia raoultii revealed to be present 61.9% samples from Dermacentor ticks. Moreover, helvetica has been identified 5.1% Ixodes
Four isolates of spotted fever group rickettsiae isolated from ticks in China were compared with all known species and strains of spotted fever group rickettsiae by immunofluorescence assay, DNA polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction endonuclease fragment length polymorphism analysis, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and Western immunoblot. The Chinese isola...
The pathogenic role of Rickettsia slovaca was first demonstrated in 1997 in a patient who presented with a single inoculation lesion of the scalp and enlarged cervical lymph nodes after receiving a bite from a Dermacentor tick. Subsequently, we evaluated the occurrence of R. slovaca infections among patients living in France and Hungary who presented with these symptoms. R. slovaca infections w...
