Both genetic and environmental factors underlie phenotypic variation. While research at the interface of evolutionary and developmental biology has made excellent advances in understanding the contribution of genes to morphology, less well understood is the manner in which environmental cues are incorporated during development to influence the phenotype. Also virtually unexplored is how evoluti...

We are beginning to appreciate the increasing complexity of mammalian gene structure. A phenomenon that adds an important dimension to this complexity is the use of alternative gene promoters that drive widespread cell type, tissue type or developmental gene regulation. Recent annotations of the human genome suggest that almost one half of the protein-coding genes contain alternative promoters,...

It is becoming increasingly clear that little in development is predetermined or permanently fixed. Rather, gene expression is activity dependent, and epigenesis is probabilistic. So, the study of genetic disorders needs to change from the still widely held view that developmental disorders can be accounted for in terms of intact versus impaired modules, to one which takes serious account of th...

A long standing question in developmental biology is how morphogen gradients establish positional information during development. Although the existence of gradients and their role in developmental patterning is no longer in doubt, the ability of cells to respond to different morphogen concentrations has been controversial. In the Drosophila wing disc, Hedgehog (Hh) forms a concentration gradie...

With the recent substantial progress in developmental biology and cancer biology, the similarities between early embryo development and tumourigenesis, as well as the important interaction between tumours and embryos become better appreciated. In this paper, we review in detail the embryonic origin of tumour, and the similarities between early embryo development and tumourigenesis with respect ...

As Francois Jacob tells it, one afternoon in September 1958, just back from New York, he walked into Jacque Monod’s office at the Pasteur Institute in Paris; he believed he had something exciting to discuss. But he found an unimpressed Monod brusquely dismissive. Tired from his flight, Jacob quickly gave up and went home to bed. The next day he returned re-energized and found an altogether more...

Epigenetics commonly refers to the developmental process by which cellular traits are established and inherited without a change in DNA sequence. These mechanisms of cellular memory also orchestrate gene expression in the adult brain and recent evidence suggests that the "epigenome" represents a critical interface between environmental signals, activation, repression and maintenance of genomic ...
