Na+ was found to be essential for the accumulation of sucrose by Vibrio alginolyticus. Sucrose uptake was completely inhibited by the addition of proton conductor at neutral pH, but not at alkaline pH, where the primary electrogenic Na+ pump generates the Na+ electrochemical gradient. We therefore conclude that sucrose transport is driven by the electrochemical potential of Na+ in this organism.

The chemical potential of oxygen ions at the novel oxygen pumping anode for electrowinning aluminum was manipulated by the electromotive forces to create thermodynamic stability. It is our anticipation that this newly designed anode can be applied to electrochemical metallurgy of other metals, such as the direct electrochemical reduction of TiO2 in the FFC process.

Free-standing coaxially structured Ag/carbon hybrid electrodes were prepared as potential anodes for micro-Li-ion batteries, which show excellent electrochemical performance, being essentially due to the beneficial effect of the unique structure, i.e. the Ag-core enhances the flexibility and electrochemical kinetics, while the carbon shell buffers volumetric change during cycling.
