Background/Aims. Destructive and metabolic changes in hepatobiliary system have been demonstrated following opium use; however, cholangiographic features of bile ducts in opium-addicted patients with sphincter of Oddi dysfunction are not clearly determined. We described these differences and assessed the effects of opium use on postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography complications. M...
We report a case of mediastinal and bilateral retro-orbital emphysema following an uncomplicated endoscopic sphincterotomy. The concurrent presence of these complications following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is rare. The simultaneous occurrence of these two complications in the same patient has not been previously reported in the literature. Furthermore, we define the first ...
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was introduced over 4 decades ago. This challenging procedure has evolved significantly with experienced endoscopists performing this procedure safely and effectively with almost 100% biliary cannulation success rates. Since first used for biliary drainage in patients with choledocholithiasis, ERCP continues to play a critical role in the ma...
Acute pancreatitis remains the most common complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). It is reported to occur in 2-10% of unselected patient samples and up to 40% of high-risk patients. The purpose of this article is to review the evidence behind the known risk factors for post-ERCP pancreatitis, as well as the technical and medical approaches developed to prevent it...
BACKGROUND Stent related occlusion and migration remains a problem despite attempts to improve stent design over this time period. Flanged polyethylene plastic stents (FPS) remains the stent of choice in most centers. Early failure of stents placed for malignant extrahepatic biliary strictures (MEBS) has not previously been studied in detail. We set out to determine the incidence and reasons fo...
Materials and methods: We investigated 148 patients that underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) due to complicated HHD between January 2000 and December 2006 at the endoscopy unit of the Department of Surgery of Atatürk University Medical School. Age, sex, indications for ERCP and endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES), ERCP findings, laboratory data, operative findings, postop...
Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) as a foodborne trematode can occasionally cause hepatobiliary diseases. We report a 67-year-old woman who was referred to our center because of the diagnosis of cholangitis. She was a resident of mountainous area with the history of unsafe water and contaminated vegetables. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed as a diagnostic and th...
In our experience, post-ERCP acute cholangitis developed in approximately 5% of cases with a not negligible mortality of nearly 30% in spite of antibiotic therapy. Analytical factors can help to identify the most serious cases that could benefit from a more aggressive approach.
