We introduce the concept of stationary metastable states (SMS’s), and give a prescription to study it using a restricted partition function formalism. This requires introducing a continuous entropy function S(E) even for a finite system, a standard practice in the literature though never clearly stated, so that it can be differentiated. The formalism ensures that SMS free energy exists all the ...

The entropy generation analysis of non-Newtonian fluid in rotational flow between two concentric cylinders is examined when the outer cylinder is fixed and the inner cylinder is revolved with a constant angular speed. The viscosity of non-Newtonian fluid is considered at the same time interdependent on temperature and shear rate. The Nahme law and Carreau equation are used to modeling dependenc...

Connections between microscopic dynamical observables and macroscopic nonequilibrium (NE) properties have been pursued in statistical physics since Boltzmann, Gibbs, and Maxwell. The simulations we describe here establish a relationship between the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and the energy dissipated as heat from a NE system to its environment. First, we show that the Kolmogorov-Sinai or dynamica...

A novel and simple method for identification of targets in infrared (IR) images is proposed in this chapter. The input image is divided into blocks of fixed size. The saliency map is extracted block-wise in three different ways. In the first approach, the entropy of each block is compared with the global entropy of the image. In the second approach, the energy of each block is compared with the...

One of entropy’s puzzling aspects is its dimensions of energy/temperature. A review of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics leads to six conclusions: ~1! Entropy’s dimensions are linked to the definition of the Kelvin temperature scale. ~2! Entropy can be defined to be dimensionless when temperature T is defined as an energy ~dubbed tempergy!. ~3! Dimensionless entropy per particle typicall...

It was shown in a previous work that, for systems in which the entropy is an extensive function of the energy and volume, the Bekenstein and the holographic entropy bounds predict new results. In this paper, we go further and derive improved upper bounds to the entropy of extensive charged and rotating systems. Furthermore, it is shown that for charged and rotating systems (including non-extens...

Abstract The change in entropy is calculated due to propagation of blast waves, produced by the explosion of spherical charge in sea water, using the energy hypothesis of Thomas. The release of energy is considered as instantaneous and the gravitation of earth is taken into account, assuming the earth to be a sphere of uniform density. For the sake of simplicity, effect of rotation of the earth...

Energy spectra of disordered systems share a common feature: If the entropy of the quenched disorder is larger than the entropy of the dynamical variables, the spectrum is locally that of a random energy model and the correlation between energy and configuration is lost. We demonstrate this effect for the Edwards-Anderson model, but we also discuss its universality.
