BACKGROUND Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite of humans, produces dysenteric diarrhea, intestinal mucosa damage and extraintestinal infection. It has been proposed that the intestinal microbiota composition could be an important regulatory factor of amebic virulence and tissue invasion, particularly if pathogenic bacteria are present. Recent in vitro studies have shown that Entamoeba h...

Phagocytosis of host cells is characteristic of tissue invasion by the intestinal ameba Entamoeba histolytica, which causes amebic dysentery and liver abscesses. Entamoeba histolytica induces host cell apoptosis and uses ligands, including C1q, on apoptotic cells to engulf them. Two mass spectrometry analyses identified calreticulin in amebic phagosome preparations, and, in addition to its func...

entamoeba histolytica is the etiological agent of invasive amoebiasis, the third leading parasitic cause of mortality in the world. our aim was to find a molecular correlation between a glucosephosphate isomerase zymodeme analyses in e. histolytica zymodemes. it was demonstrated that natural and recombinant glucosephosphate isomerase enzymes of e. histolytica comigrated in the starch gel electr...

INTRODUCTION This study evaluated the frequency of intestinal parasites, emphasizing the identification and differentiation of Entamoeba spp. METHODS Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), coproantigen tests and morphometric analysis were performed for Entamoeba spp. differentiation. RESULTS The overall frequency of intestinal parasites was 65%. Entamoeba histolytica was detected by the...

Entamoeba histolytica infection is one of the significantly common pathogenic protozoa encountered in Saudi Arabia. Previous reports did not distinguish between E. histolytica and E. dispar as differential diagnosis is essential both for treatment decision and public health knowledge. Studies suggested that stool antigen assays are more sensitive and specific than microscopy for the diagnosis o...

Entamoeba histolytica, the parasitic amoeba responsible for amoebiasis, causes approximately 100,000 deaths every year. There is currently no vaccine against this parasite. We have previously shown that intracecal inoculation of E. histolytica trophozoites leads to chronic and non-healing cecitis in mice. Entamoeba moshkovskii, a closely related amoeba, also causes diarrhea and other intestinal...

Entamoeba histolytica meningoencephalitis has not been described in the modern literature, which is distinct from that caused by free-living amoebae. We report the first case of E. histolytica meningoencephalitis without liver or brain abscesses. Cerebrospinal fluid revealed 2 + very motile trophozoites. Our patient was successfully treated with intravenous metronidazole.

Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites are covered by lipophosphoglycan-peptidoglycan molecules which may be key virulence factors. We found that pretreatment of severe combined immunodeficient mice bearing human intestinal xenografts with a monoclonal antibody to the amebic lipophosphoglycan-peptidoglycan molecules can prevent or significantly reduce the human intestinal inflammation and tissue da...

It is now well established that Entamoeba moshkovskii and Entamoeba dispar are two distinct nonpathogenic species, but microscopically indistinguishable from the pathogenic species E. histolytica, the causative organism of amoebiasis. Traditionally diagnosis of E. histolytica infection has relied upon microscopic examination of cyst or trophozoite stage in fresh or fixed stool specimens which h...
