Monolithic ceramics have been fabricated from coated green fibers to create fibrous microstructures. The fibrous monoliths consist of high aspect ratio polycrystalline regions (cells) of a primary phase separated by thin secondphase regions (cell boundaries) designed to improve fracture resistance. The cells are the remnants of the green fiber which consists of ceramic powder and a polymer bind...

A variation of a hanging pendulum thrust stand capable of measuring the performance of an electric thruster operating in the vertical orientation is presented. The vertical orientation of the thruster dictates that the thruster must be horizontally offset from the pendulum pivot arm, necessitating the use of a counterweight system to provide a neutrally stable system. Motion of the pendulum arm...

Fiber reinforced polymer materials are continuing to show great promise for using strengthening reinforced concrete structures. These materials are an excellent option for use as external reinforcing, because of their light weight, resistant to corrosion and high strength. The main aim of this study is to investigate the flexural characteristic of RC beams using GFRP sheets and strips. This pap...

Ann R Coll Surg Engl 2012; 94: 359–372 Many lower extremity, pelvic and acetabular fractures require traction as first aid management prior to definitive fixation. While skin traction and Thomas splints are generally available, weights to provide countertraction are often missing or in parts of the hospital remote to the emergency department. A sharps bin (Sharpsguard® orange 11.5; Daniels, Oxf...

As a minimally invasive means of extracting a tissue sample from a patient, current endoscopic biopsy needles generally do not preserve tissue histology and often require multiple attempts to obtain a tissue sample. This paper presents an endoscopic biopsy needle with internal flexures that enables tissue to enter the hollow needle and then be severed from the surrounding tissue when the needle...

We designed and fabricated silicon probe with nanophotonic force sensor to directly stimulate neurons (PC12) and measured its effect on neurite initiation and elongation. A single-layer pitch-variable diffractive nanogratings was fabricated on silicon nitride probe using e-beam lithography, reactive ion etching and wet-etching techniques. The nanogratings consist of flexure folding beams suspen...

We report an unusual case of a giant colonic mucocele following ileo-sigmoid bypass surgery in a patient with advanced adenocarcinoma of the splenic flexure. The formation of a giant colonic mucocele resulted from distal splenic flexure obstruction due to tumour relapse and proximal caecal obstruction due to peritoneal disease with subsequent accumulation of mucus in the closed loop.

Crack propagation across laminated brittle solids from uniaxial tension or line-wedge loading is studied in real time using a model glass/epoxy architecture. The fracture progresses from one layer to the next via reinitiation from pre-existing flaws on the glass surfaces ahead of the primary crack in a process accompanied by some penetration through the interlayer but generally little or no del...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS This study attempts to characterize the biomechanical properties of a PDS-cartilage composite graft for use in septorhinoplasty. STUDY DESIGN Experimental Study. METHODS This study used a PDS analog, porcine cartilage cut to 1 × 5 × 20 mm, and a mechanical testing platform to measure flexure of a composite graft. Samples were assessed in four groups based on variations...

In the drilling process of difficult-to-cut materials, conventional has resulted in various problems such as high temperature and poor machining quality. Low-frequency vibration-assisted great potential overcoming these since broken chips are generated. this paper, a low-frequency device is developed by using novel ring flexure hinge elastic recovery mechanism. Firstly, based on theory mechanic...
