The Jaipur foot was developed for barefoot amputees by Professor P. K. Sethi. He used local artisans and readily available materials. The prosthesis was cheap and could be made in one hour. It enabled amputees to work in rural conditions, muddy and wet fields and to climb trees. It has been widely used in India, South East Asia and Africa, where local variations to the design have now been made.

The design of a knee joint is a key issue in robotics and biomechanics to improve the compatibility between prosthesis and human movements and to improve the bipedal robot performances. We propose a novel design for the knee joint of a planar bipedal robot, based on a four-bar linkage. The dynamic model of the planar bipedal robot is calculated. We design walking reference trajectories with dou...

Five solid-ankle experimental prosthetic feet were used in this double-blind randomized crossover study to determine the effects of forefoot flexibility on gait of 14 unilateral transtibial prosthesis users. Flexibility in experimental feet was altered by changing the number of flexural hinges in their forefoot sections. When experimental prosthetic foot conditions were compared, measured prost...

The investigators conducted a double-blind randomized crossover study to determine the effects of prosthetic foot forefoot flexibility on oxygen cost and subjective preference rankings of 13 unilateral transtibial prosthesis users. Five experimental feet were fabricated for use in the study: F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5. F1 was most flexible, F5 was least flexible, and F3 was designed to conform to a...

BACKGROUND Whether all-polyethylene tibial (APT) components are beneficial to patients who received distal femur limb-salvage surgery lacks high-quality clinical follow-up and mechanical evidence. This study aimed to investigate the biomechanics of the distal femur reconstructed with APT tumor knee prostheses using finite element (FE) analysis based on our previous, promising clinical outcome. ...

The purpose of this investigation was to measure the effect of two terminal prosthetic components, the SACH foot and the single axis foot, on the locomotion patterns of unilateral below-knee amputees. The ten subjects who participated in the study were evaluated on two occasions, once following prescription of a PTB prosthesis and one terminal device and once following its replacement with the ...

A review was performed of the literature of the last eleven years (1990-2000) with the topic: "clinical use of instrumented gait analysis in patients wearing a prosthesis of the lower limb". To this end a literature search was performed in Embase, Medline and Recal. Forty-five (45) articles were identified for study from which 34 were reviewed. The reviews were divided into five subtopics: 1) a...

A 31-year-old male was diagnosed with osteoblastic osteosarcoma of the talus. Limb-salvage surgery for talar performed by replacing intact talus a 3D-printed prosthesis made from medical-grade titanium. The had 3 tunnels simulating ligaments around At last follow-up, functional and clinical outcomes were excellent. Our patient achieved 93% restoration Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score as well...
