The maxillary tuberosity can fracture during extraction of a molar tooth. If a small bony fragment is affected, the extraction of the tooth and tuberosity continues; however, a conservative approach is advised if the bony fragment is large. In a modified blind surgical technique, the tooth is removed without the fractured bone.
PURPOSE In a prospective study, we assessed if a diagnosis of osteoporosis and periodontitis could predict hip and hand fractures in older persons. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bone density was assessed by a Densitometer. Periodontitis was defined by evidence of alveolar bone loss. RESULTS 788 Caucasians (52.4% women, overall mean age: 76 years, S.D.± 9.0, range: 62 to 96) were enrolled and 7.4% h...
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of screw fixation without bone fusion for unstable thoracolumbar and lumbar burst fracture. METHODS Nine patients younger than 40 years underwent screw fixation without bone fusion, following postural reduction using a soft roll at the involved vertebra, in cases of burst fracture. Their motor power was in...
We used technetium-99m antimony colloid to visualize the bone marrow of the head of the femur within twenty-four hours after interruption of the blood supply by subcapital osteotomy and section of the ligamentum teres in thirteen rabbits and within twenty-four hours after a subcapital fracture in thirty patients. Of the rabbits, all showed loss of marrow radioactivity over the affected femoral ...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the radiographic outcomes of short-segment posterior instrumentation plus vertebroplasty using injectable calcium sulfate cement (CSC) for thoracolumbar compression fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-eight patients with a single-level thoracolumbar compression fracture, who underwent short-segment pedicle screw fixation and CSC vertebroplasty, were included in the s...
OBJECTIVE To estimate the risk of death or severe harm due to bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) among patients undergoing hip hemiarthroplasty for fractured neck of femur. SETTING Hospitals providing secondary and tertiary care throughout the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales. PARTICIPANTS Cases reported to the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) in which t...
Secondary cartilage forms on avian and mammalian dermal bones, both during normal ontogeny and during repair of fractures, but it has not been observed in any other vertebrate class. We fractured the left lower jaws of adult spotted salamanders, Ambystoma maculatum, to see whether secondary cartilage would form during fracture repair. It did not. Instead, periosteal hyperplasia produced a callu...
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Nasal fracture is one of the most common facial fractures and the main goal of this study was evaluation of closed reduction surgery of nasal bone fractures.METHODS: Thirty six patients including 24 male and 12 female patients suffered from nasal bone fractures were treated by closed reduction method. Preoperative and postoperative computed tomographic scans were analyzed by...
INTRODUCTION Human dental pulp stem/stromal cells (hDPSCs) in adults are primarily derived from the pulp tissues of permanent third molar teeth in existing literatures, whereas no reports exist, to our knowledge, on deriving hDPSCs from a tooth without the need for surgical procedure. The aim of this study was to raise a novel idea to source hDPSCs from complicated crown-fractured teeth requiri...
Dentoalveolar fracture is defined as a fracture in the bone surrounding the teeth without any extension to the basal bones of the maxilla or mandible (1). As for other parts of the facial skeleton, the treatment strategy for dentoalveolar fractures consists of fracture reduction, fixation and immobilization (2); however, some dentoalveolar fractures are difficult to treat. In some dentoalveola...
