BACKGROUND Inflammatory biomarkers have shown consistent associations with disability and frailty in older adults. Statin medications may reduce the incidence the frailty because of their anti-inflammatory effects. This study examines associations between current use, duration, and potency of statin medications and incident frailty in initially nonfrail women 65 years old or older. METHODS Th...

BACKGROUND Although research productivity in the field of frailty has risen exponentially in recent years, there remains a lack of consensus regarding the measurement of this syndrome. This overview offers three services: first, we provide a comprehensive catalogue of current frailty measures; second, we evaluate their reliability and validity; third, we report on their popularity of use. MET...

BACKGROUND The debate on frailty in later life focuses primarily on deficits and their associations with adverse (health) outcomes. In addition to deficits, it may also be important to consider the abilities and resources of older adults. This study was designed to gain insights into the lived experiences of frailty among older adults to determine which strengths can balance the deficits that a...

Frailty is a pre-disability condition. It now can be defined clinically. The major factors leading to frailty are sarcopenia and a decline in executive function. Stressors precipitate frail individuals into a state of disability. Diabetics develop the conditions necessary for frailty earlier than other aging individuals. Appropriate treatment of diabetes mellitus and frailty precursors can resu...

In this paper, we present some distributional properties of the survival and frailty distribution involved in the proportional odds (PO) frailty model. Stochastic orderings are studied for this proportional odds frailtymodel. It is showed that negative dependence arises in the PO frailty model as opposed to the proportional hazard frailty model.

Objective To investigate the association of frailty syndrome with socioeconomic and health variables among older adults. Methods This is a cross-sectional, observational and analytical household research conducted with a sample of 1,609 urban elderly. We used: semi-structured questionnaire, scales (Katz, Lawton and shortened version of Geriatric Depression Scale) and Fragility Phenotype propo...

The marginal proportional hazards frailty model for multivariate failure time data characterizes the intracluster dependency with the frailty model while formulating the marginal distributions with the proportional hazards model. The gamma frailty distribution has been widely used to model intracluster dependency because of its simple interpretation and mathematical tractability. Glidden (2000)...

BACKGROUND Frailty, a validated measure of physiologic reserve, predicts adverse health outcomes among adults with end-stage renal disease. Frailty typically is not measured clinically; instead, a surrogate-perceived frailty-is used to inform clinical decision-making. Because correlations between perceived and measured frailty remain unknown, the aim of this study was to assess their relationsh...

BACKGROUND There is little certainty as to the prevalence of frailty in Canadians in younger adulthood. This study examines and compares the prevalence of frailty in Canadians 18-79 years old using the Accumulation of Deficits and Fried models of frailty. METHODS The Canadian Health Measures Study data were used to estimate the prevalence of frailty in adults 18-79 years old. A 23-item Frailt...

The objectives of this study were to compare how different frailty measures (Frailty Phenotype/FP, Groningen Frailty Indicator/GFI and Tilburg Frailty Indicator/TFI) predict short-term adverse outcomes. Secondarily, adopting a multidimensional approach to frailty (integral conceptual model-TFI), this study aims to compare how physical, psychological and social frailty predict the outcomes. A lo...
